Yes you remove the rear bumper.

They are wired so you have to run the wires to your brake lights and/or turn signal lights, however you want them to function.

Most would just wire them into the break lights or to stay on at all times.

For a really custom install you wire the sides for turn signals and the rears for break lights.

There is a rubber groumet on the rear of the car after you remove the bumper that will allow you to run your wires up into the car.

If you purchace the non LED without wires you can replace the sides without removing the bumper but still must remove for the rears.

Yeah that's an option to keep them on at all times.

I have my rears wired into brake lights.

Wiring them into the license plate light, they will come on with your headlights (i.e. only at night), since that's the only time the license plate light comes on. That's how I did it too.
