KYB shocks

I was just looking thru their parts catalogue and noticed: (http://www.kyb.com/catalog/2007_passenger_car.pdf) that KYB will have front struts available Fall 2007. Are KYB's any good? The rear shocks are pretty cheap compared to anything else thats out there.

I've had kyb's on on some older cars i've owned and they were great. Dunno how good they will be for the 3 though but I imagine better than stock.

Agreed - OEM aftermarket replacements are usually better than stock, but I wouldnt count on them being too much of a performance upgrade. If you are looking for a little better ride control, and longer life, they will probably fit the bill.

I had a set on my Z24 and they were OK.

I'm still waiting for the Bilsteins to come to the US, personally.
Yea, I hear what both of you guys are saying. I guess for me, I dont seem to have the expendable income (it seems) that some of the people on the board apparently do. Arent the Bilstein's like just shy of $500 for the front only? Thats kinda crazy to me, heh.

I am just trying to find reasonable upgrades where I can, that arent going to break the bank.

Bilsteins are available through NSNmotorsports
Yes I know, but the Bilsteins from NSN are not made for the 3 - they are adapted to fit the 3. Check out Steve's prior posts on the subject.

And the Bilsteins listed on tirerack - were they confirmed to be correct? There was some discrepancy since they are the same part number as the Volvo S40. Did anyone ever confirm that they are interchangeable? Plus they dont list a rear shock application.

Before I plunk down $440 just on front struts (the rears will prolly be at least $120 each, if they ever become available), I want to be 100% sure.

I asked NSN about the Bilsteins, he said that it is made for the 3. I believe he is a trust worthy guy.

cosmicbluems3 is his screen name

His shocks are custom valved for the stock springs, i don't know if NSN is the one that did it for him.
beats me. dunno the specifics, but i know he has bilsteins
bilstein makes the front shocks for the Mazda 3 but there are currently no rear shocks from them designed specifically for the 3. Steve from NSN uses Volvo S40 rear bilsteins with a slight mod of one of the mounting holes if i recall correctly.
do you know what the modification was with the mounting holes? Increasing it? Repositioning it. If it was just drilling out a new whole Im all down for some Bilsteins, actually have been considering them for a couple of months now
I believe it is just drilling out an insert in the mounting hole or something to that degree. Contact Steve and ask him about it to get the definitive info.
KYB's are great! Just make sure you put the correct spring to them. TEIN springs don't go well with them at all. I made that mistake on my WRX! I will NEVER buy TEIN anything ever again! UGH...They are just great marketers..thats all!
Depends on what Tein stuff you get, they make much better coilover than just springs.
Hey, save your money for a set of Koni Yellows... KYB only have an OE replacement line available for the Mazda 3. As you can see from that chart, they do not have a performance damper for our cars.
Had KYB on 2 Cars I have owned..

92 SC - Stock Springs 160k on the clock - Made a huge improvement....

99 Grand Am GT - 1.7 inch Lowering Springs + KYB GR-2 Struts - They were firm and did great... The car is still be driven by my little brother no problems...

Majoirty of The Saturn community relies on KYB-GR2 to provide a Firm Strut for Lowering, No one has any real problem with them to date.. Cheap and effective... Great Upgrade for the Price IMO
