TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO
HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF
AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER.

THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio is who created the "tent city jail":

He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.
He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but "G" movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails so he hooked up the cable TV again with only the Disney channel and the weather channel.

When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.

He cut of f coffee since it has zero nutritional value.

When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton -- If you don't like it, don't come back."

He bought Newt Gingrich's lecture series on tape that he pipes into the jails.

When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

More on the Arizona Sheriff:

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before.

Many wer e also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks.

"It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 year . "It's inhumane."

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!"

Way to go, Sheriff! Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers' money and enjoy things taxpayers can't a fford to have for themselves.

Man, if we had the space (and resources) here, then maybe we should do that to our prisoners.

But I guess the homeless will get jealous.

if the point is to punish them, why not just tie them to a tree and beat the hell out of them? or maybe cut their hands off like they do in the middle east. or how about a good old singapore-style caning?

or maybe just plain murder them, like arpaio did with scott norberg?

if you want to see first hand with arpaio's own words how nutty he is, his appearance on p&t bullshit is a real winner.

the "punishment" prescribed by law is confinement for so many years. Keeping them in prison is their punishment.
Unforunately, they then become the resposibility of the state or feds to house, feed, protect...blah, blah, blah...and the bleeding heart liberals have gotten their way so far...imo.
i don't think prosoners should get tv. period.

i think they should ride stationary bicyles that generate electricty and pipe that into the grid. the amount of food they get will be based on how many watts they pumped into the grid.

you mean the war on drugs one? i can't believe that's the same guy!! as i was reading this, i was thinking, wow this guy is even crazier than that sheriff from the bullshit episode. The point of this is, it's a good idea to have this kind of punishment for some crimes, but not for, say... noncompliance. or any nonviolent drug offense hah. potheads would never survive in those conditions (seriously).

In reality prison should be 1500cals a day, work for free and go clean up trash, clean buildings. Wash garbage trucks, crush concrete. It should be a hell hole. You get free education, GARANTEED meals, health care, money. Smoking isnt allowed and they can watch the weather channel on tv. Or make them work and charge them rent for food and cells haha.

But then again the thought of that still wouldnt make me not punch the guys lights out. Id just kill him and drop him off into the ocean 4 miles down with a 500lb block and never tell anyone.

thats him.

thing is, if people keep violently dying in arpaio's jail and he keeps losing wrongful death lawsuits as he has in the past, his jail won't be the money saver he touts anymore. the county's insurance deductible just went up 500% because of him.

arpaio might be "tough on criminals" but this appears to have little impact on actual crime. in the end it's just a feelgood exercise for the public, one which gives people warm fuzzies but has no real results. how much are maricopa county residents willing to pay for fuzzies? guess we'll find out in the next few wrongful death lawsuits.
