Is 3M Paint Protection Film Worth It?

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has any experience or comments regarding the 3M Paint Protection Film. For those not familiar with this, it is a clear, non-yellowing film that is applied to the front surfaces of the car's paint to protect it against chips from flying debris on the highway. These kits are very expensive for what they are, but when compared to the cost of having the car repainted, I guess they're not that bad. I'm contemplating having this done while my car still looks new, but I am wondering how well it will hold up over time. Here's a link for these kits so you have an idea what I am talking about:

After reading many posts on this forum regarding people being sick over how their paint looks over time, it really makes me want to seriously consider this. If anyone has this on their car, I would love to hear your review of the product. Or if anyone else would care to comment of their thoughts on the benefits/drawbacks of this product, I would greatly appreciate it! :D

It's completely worth it if you have the cash. I installed it on my Frontier and my paint was perfect a year later. Nose, rocker panels, door sill edges and headlights. I love it.
At the very least, consider getting a 3M headlight protection kit (usually about $45). Every car I've ever owned has ended up with chips on the headlight; one cracked and needed replacement. I had mine professionally installed, but sort of regretted paying $125 and feel I could have done it better myself for 1/3 the price.
I've never actually seen this on a car in person. I think it would be a great investment, but I'm a little afraid that it wouldn't look good. I love having a clean freshly waxed shinny car, and I think this would ruin that look. Also, I'm not sure how good it would be for the paint to be covered up like that. I think paint needs to "breath" and these might cause your paint to dry out. It's probably better to just take good car of your car, and accept that it's not going to look perfect forever. And there's always touch up paint.
Thanks for the reply's. As Adamsch had said, I am also concerned on how it will look over time. I would be afraid that the paint might not fade as much under the plastic and if a few years later it started to look worn that I couldn't remove it due to the difference in color. But on the other hand, having my paint look all chipped is not much better. If it wasn't so much money, it wouldn't be as big of a decision for me.

Getting the headlight covers is definately a good idea though, as Colostomy Bag had said. The headlight lenses on my last car got so cloudy and yellow that it made it hard to see at night. My only concern with them is that with the Xenon's, would they get too hot and cause the plastic to melt?

GimmeA3s, did your plastic look as good as when it was first installed, or did it start to peel on the edges and what not?

If you have it professionally installed, they'll take care of this for you, but if you're like me and put it on yourself, you have to be careful and round off all the corners...i.e. you can't leave any 90 degree angles, as the process of cleaning the car will peel it up at the corner. If you round them off, they'll stay put. I had to go back over the truck after about 9 months and razorblade the corners off. I had no problem with edges peeling, just corners. Other than that, I had zero problems with it and it gave great protection, even on the fenders right behind each wheel.
i just had it installed on my MS3. the full kit was $550 with installation. I got them to install just the bumper kit (upper and lower) for $300. it covers the bulk of the front fascia and is pretty much invisible. make sure you get it done from a reputable/ skilled installer.
If you want to DIY:

Some Walmarts are selling 3M protective film in the Automotive Section for $14.99

Wow, 8)

I don't know where you're located, but that's a great price. Buying the self install kits off the internet costs that much! You don't happen to live in the tri-state area, do you? If so, could I get the name of your installer? Did they mention anything regarding paint fade. Plastic blocks UV light which is what causes paint to fade. My car is red, which probably is the worst color for paint fade. I'm concerned that a few years down the road the front nose will appear much less faded than the rest of the car.
i just edited my earlier post, i meant to say $300, not 4300.
I live in the carolina's so that may not be of much help to you. It was www.ultrashieldusa.com and they had an installer in my area. if you take a look at their kit, the bumpers are pretty much the bulk of the front fascia. i could have gotten the headlights, hood, side view mirrors, etc. done too but i felt they wernt worth the money. the installer did a fabulous job. check out the website - i found it mentioned somewhere else on these forums.

ps-which tri-state area? :) wikipedia lists 38 so called tri-state areas in the country... hehe
Shiii. Beside from the mazda bra I'm having the whole front half and lower rear done in 3M, it's running me $1100 total with discount, front bumper,hood,fenders,mirrors,a-pillar,lower rear valence
I had it on my G35 coupe, and now on my Speed. It is a must. Now it will only protect, meaning that rocks and debris may still penatrate the film. That type of damage is not covered under the waranty. I had some rocks go through and chip the paint and ask the installer about a fix for the film and said that I would have to pay to replace.

Thanks for the info. That price is amazing! I had two estimates that were both more in line with what TruboPower said; both around $900 for the front bumper and front third of the hood/fenders. I checked the website you mentioned; unfortunately there aren't any installers in my area close enough. By the way, by tri-state I meant New York, New Jersey, & Connecticut. Sorry about that, didn't know that there were so many tri-state areas.

I'm feeling the same way you did though for what to have done. If I have it done, I think I'm only getting the front bumper done. Most of the kits I've seen require two separate kits for this - upper & lower. The hood and fenders seems like overkill, cause the kits only cover the first third of the hood and I'm sure you'll see a visible line where it ends. Heck, if I could afford it, I'd hermetically seal the whole freakin' car . But getting just the bumper done seems like a good happy medium, without it getting too expensive. I would love to try one of the DIY kits, but if it didn't apply correctly, I'd be out the cost of the whole kit. Anyone out there actually successfully install one of these kits? I have a feeling that you'd have to install a few to get the hang of it.

you are correct, the bumper kit for the speed 3 came in two parts.
search for 'rockblocker' on the web too. they sell partial kits for as little as $150.
I got hit with a piece of metal about a 2 months ago .. i wish i had it on my hood !
