My ipod sits on the little device-holder spot next to the shifter.
I drilled a hole in the center console cubby, and pass the Audiolink wire through there.
That way, the wire can stick out of the cubby, run alongside the handbrake, and reach where the ipod is sitting. It looks very clean. However it requires removal of the entire center console and drilling of plastic.
For storage, the ipod is a perfect fit inside the ashtray and the Audiolink wire sits inside the cubby. I can post pics if you need them.

Maaku, not knocking you, but why do you run the cable all the way back and drill into stuff when you can easily run it from either the ashtray or cupholders without any drilling, and without needing lots of exposed cable when you're using it?

simple reason: aesthetics
firstly, i can't pass it through the ashtray because that is the spot for my ipod during storage. not willing to let it sit visible from the outside when i leave car alone. if you know, the 20gb ipod is a perfect, snug fit inside the ashtray.
furthermore, if you unplug the ipod, where will the wire go? just dangling outside? it would be an eyesore, so I want to be able to store the wire in the cubby. =)

at the risk of sounding obvious... why not store the ipod...umm....in the console w/ the wires? why bother moving it? Throw a pic up showing us your shifter /ashtray / console area-- i think icspots thinks you can see wires near the ebrake / shifter area-- and from your original description i thought so too, but i'm guessing we just mis-interpreted you.

i do not want to leave the ipod plugged in 24/7 because it will drain the car battery if you leave it there too long. i also want it to be easily accessible (by letting it sit next to the shifter.) the point of what i did is to have the ipod detachable and be able to cleanly store the ipod and wire. indeed, the 20gb ipod is too big to stuff the wire in the ashtray as well (i want to use the insert). yes, you can see the wire running through the center. i dont understand the misunderstanding. :?
