i've seen night pics of the instrument cluster with and without the blue ring around the gauges. what's up with that?

It is actually a silver ring around the gauges and a blue light shines on them to make them appear blue. Add that to the already red backlight and it looks pretty cool.

so the blue does appear at night then while you're driving around?

Yes it does. If you hit the button above the gauges one time it'll make the red be as bright as it is during the day and it washes out the blue. Hit it again and the red dims and the blue becomes much more visible.

Also the base "i" models do not come with the "tri-color" guage cluster

can you put the s model's gauges in the i model later on? you see, I have the 3i, yet the 3s' gauges were very nice
