Hi,

I have a used Mazda 3 with the MZR-CD 2.2 engine. The timing chain was done at ~92k miles, the car is now at 98. I know chains don't need to be done very often, but I'm wondering when it should be done next. Perhaps at 200k ish miles? That's if I even own it that long

Thanks

There are too many factors and variables that need to be considered to speculate any set interval.
Overall condition of engine health checked, compression of cylinders, leak-down and coolant testing
Interanl engine parts service and at what milage.
The manufacture of the parts used for the services done
Type of driving.
General normal servicing of fluids and filters

Timing chains generally start to get loose after a long period of operation. My MZ3 is closing in on 200K miles and that may be something I should consider addressing should I not opt for an engine swap to a 2.5L.

No issues on our old 6 at 200K+ miles. Of course, YMMV. If all is quiet, nothing to worry about.
That is not necessarily exactly true? Some problems you may not always hear just opening the hood with the engine running unless you are somewhat experienced in all the sounds being generated good and bad. .
And mileage with engine parts like a timing chain and the respective other parts that goes with that system may wear differently with mileage and the type of standard service and driving habits.

You know I learned years ago reading forums and helping emmer the one constant is the exception to the normal rules responses. The main one is comparing what some attain for miles without breakage or wear parts. In the real world those are truly exception to the norm! If it weren't my service shops would be closing for lack of business. ;)
