HELP WITH LEDS (FAQs)

sorry. i'm fairly new to LEDs and to these forums so excuse my basic questions. i just got my mazda3s sport black mica sedan a few months ago and i was wondering how to add led lighting to the footwells. i'm already planning to change the map lights and dome lights to blue leds. i've been reading around and it seems fairly easy. my question is a little deeper though. i was wondering if i wire up the leds to the map lights what happens when i turn on the map lights? what happens when i switch the setting to "door" and the door opens? what happens when i switch the settings to "off" and the door opens? is it basically that if i wire up the footwell LEDs on both the passenger side and the driver side to the map lights that whenever the map lights are on, the LEDs are on? and what happens when the doors are closed and i press the light to turn on the map lights, will they turn on?

It should work exactly like you said, if that is what you want.

I have my footwell lights wired seperate and I installed a switch.
If you wire to your maplights, the footwell LEDs will come on when the doors open. They wont come on when you turn on your map lights, considering turning them on is just completing a circuit inside the housing and doesn't control the power supply.

I wired my footwell LEDs to the maplights, and then another set to the ashtray light. If you wire to the ash tray light, they will only come on when your head lights are turned on.

If you want to pick and choose when they come on and when they dont, wire them to the cigarette lighter and put them on a switch.

so now knowing that the footwell leds will come on when the doors are open, what happens if i turn the map light switch to "off"? will the footwells still light up? or does the map light switch have to be "door" in order for the footwells to turn on? and will the footwells fade away like the map light does?
If you wire the led's to the map light, when the switch is...

Switched to door: Leds will come on only when you open the door
switched to on: Leds will stay on as well as the map light
switched to off: neither the map light nor the led's will be on
Okay, let's make this easy instead of the "what ifs".

What do you want your LEDs to do? When do you want them to turn on? Answer these questions and we'll tell you how to wire them up.

sorry for all the questions and what ifs. lol. but plain and simple, i just want the LEDs to turn on when the doors are open kind of like other cars how their footwell lights only turn on when the doors are open.
then wire to the map lights. will only turn on when the doors are open.
You will need to wire them up to the map lights. I'm on my phone so I can't post the link but if you look for the LED sill plate thread you will see how to wire them up.
+1 wire to your maplights. That's the same way I wired my LED mirror lights as puddle lamps. http://www.mazda3forums.com/index.php?topic=103358.0

The way they'll work is the lights will come one when:
-you unlock the door with the remote
-you open a door
-you turn the ignition off

They'll turn off when:
-you lock the doors via the remote
-you start the car (unless the door is open)
-after a preset time limit of being on.... I think 30 seconds to a minute.... I'd have to check.

nice this is exactly what i needed. for your map lights though, is your switch set to "door" or "off"? or does it even matter?
No problem buddy.. go do it now! And take pictures.

The "Door"/"Off" doesnt matter.

I do have my switch set to door, but AFAIK they should still come on with all those instances. The door/off switch on the maplights controls the lights themselves, however you're tapping the wires before the switch. Incidentally the wiring to the maplights is a 12v constant and a variable ground. When you open the door, unlock, etc. it grounds out and completes the circuit. Technically you can get a 12v signal anywhere and just run a wire to the ground. Realistically it's just as easy to run a double wire up and just do both there.

wow. everyone is sooooo helpful. but i just keep coming up with some dumb questions. sorry, but THIS IS MY LAST ONE FOR SURE... lol. will the LEDs dim out? kind of like the dome and map lights

The only dumb question is the one you don't ask..... that is unless it's really asinine, then it's just stupid. :p j/k :hide:

Yes, they'll dim.
