***FIRST AND FOREMOST...IF POSTING THIS IS AGAINST THE RULES, PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP! I HAVE LOOKED AROUND AND MESSAGED A FEW MODS TO CHECK ON THIS AND I HAVE NOT HEARD BACK. I WILL STOP THIS THE SECOND I AM TOLD TO. THANKS!!!***

It is estimated that 3- 5% of the current school-age population (1.35 to 2.25 million children) are classified as having specific learning disabilities. The majority of these children have problems with reading, math, and writing. After prolonged academic failure, many experience a low motivation to learn and begin a process of isolation and acting out. Our schools are not working for these children, and a proactive and empowering solution is necessary.

ADDvantage Learning Academy is that solution. This school takes the road that public education will not. Letting our children slip through the cracks simply because they do not learn the same way that everyone else does is no longer an option. We know that every child is a brilliant person and with the right environment, they will come to understand that. Everyone has the right to succeed in life and to do so with dignity, confidence and support. That is what this is all about. We create an extraordinary learning environment where every student's unique potential is realized. Imagine a school that can enable and empower the children that have been shut down by public schools; give pride and confidence to kids that are brought down by labels and special treatment and open up a world of opportunity that they may have never known existed. That is power and that is what ADDvantage Learning Academy is all about.

If you want to see a model of what ADDvantage Learning Academy will be like, check out www.grovesacademy.org. Groves Academy is a great school that is doing wonderful things for the world. However, at the cost of $18,000 per year, not everyone can afford to have their kids attend. ADDvantage Learning Academy is the No-Cost alternative! We believe that no one should have to go broke to provide the education that their extraordinary children deserve.

If you are interested in helping us out with this world changing school, here is how:

1. The largest area that we are working on right now is fundraising. Like I stated above, we are out to raise $1.5 million! If I can get everyone on this forum to donate a minimum of $10 dollars, that would be a total of aprox. $120,000 for our school. And that is just from the Mazda 3 Forums! If you would like to donate more, I'm not going to stop you. All of this is going to a non-profit so you will get the bonus of a tax write-off! Just let me know when you donate if you want a tax form. I would prefer that not everyone ask for one in the amount of $5 because I will have to fill these out by hand. Try to make a sizeable donation so you can really benefit from this write-off. I know that paypal would work the best for most of you, so we can go that route. Just send the money to [email protected] and all will be taken care of. You can also send check to me if that works better for you. PM me if you want to get my address to do so.

*You may need to sing-up with PayPal and if possible, add a 5% processing fee.
*ADDvantage Learning is a non-profit so every donation is tax deductible!
*Also, check with your employers. Some of them have a donation matching program. Some companies may also want to help out.

2. Visit http://www.sayyess.com/alapetit.cfm and add your name to our petition

3. Contribute items to our silent auction. These can be physical items or services that you may offer.

We will be working on this until April 12th so if you are interested in helping, we will need to know by then. If you need any other information, please contact me. I would love to help you!

Sincerely,

Mike Shadick

Help Mike dammit, he's a cool fellow. And for the MN cats.... I think we should still get the car wash sponsored by the Hooters girls going.

I'm in for the Hooters wash. Hell I think we should do that one once a month for different groups. It could be MM3E way to give back to the community!

Here is a general idea about the school:

ADDvantage Learning Academy

Mission: We create an extraordinary learning environment where every student's unique potential (brilliance) is fully realized.

Vision: All children have the right to succeed, and to do so with dignity, confidence, and support

How: A flexible, year-round educational system that focuses on creative learning solutions for each student. We place learning* as our highest goal, working to inspire each student to be their best and enjoy the learning process. *(Learning defined as evoking or drawing out as opposed to stuffing it in) Each student is responsible to do their best. Each teacher is responsible to find a creative solution to how each student does that. Each parent is responsible to partner with their son or daughter as well as the teacher to unlock the student's passions to make learning fun, challenging, enjoyable and engaging. The student, teacher and parent(s) collaborate to create workable solutions. Each student has their own Independent Learning Program (ILP).

What makes us unique:
Size. Small class sizes (10:1 maximum) and a small school size (less than 300) will maximize effectiveness. Smaller and more personal learning environment is proven to be effective in student achievement and effective learning.

Personalized Learning Plans. Developed collaboratively by students, teachers, and parents, these plans are geared towards multiple intelligences and different learning styles. This assures meaningful and relevant instruction for each child.

Service learning projects. Year-long community projects improve student motivation and engagement, result in higher scores on standardized tests, increase acceptance of cultural diversity, heighten experiential learning, and amplify civic engagement.

Longer school year. The Academy will have 74.5 hours more than most public school students for instructional time and learning opportunities.

Cross-aged peer tutoring. When older children are paired with younger students, self esteem and learning increase.

Staff Development . Significant attention will be devoted to creating, improving, and retaining the highest quality teachers. Their development will be monitored over time for measurable results.

Parent engagement and development. Parents may attend regular staff training sessions (together and individually) on transformational methods, coaching, and educational specialties in order to develop a collaborative, cooperative, and supportive community for the students.

We offer training to teachers (for CEUs) and parents on a monthly basis (separately and jointly at times). Included are transformational methods, coaching, specialists, business and community leaders, athletes, vocational specialties, educational specialties…basically the idea is for everyone involved to learn how to learn.

A rigorous hiring process is created to attract the BEST teachers. Peer/Panel hiring is part of that process.

Before opening, we meet with groups of teachers, parents and students to find the "right" solutions vs. the ones I/we may get attached to.

We find testing solutions that are a superior method to measuring results in learning other than through the written only evaluations (like the IOWA test).

We keep open minds, value differences and challenge "answers" continually seeking workable solutions.
