Hi from what I've heard at the closest drag stip is that if your car can hit 13.9 and lower you have to wear a helmet. Here's my question. Where and which type of helmet? My friends are telling me use the bike helmet is this the right helmet to wear? How much do they go for? Please advise.

Thanks!

you need a DOT approved helmet at most drag strips...this can include bike helmets or just plain jane helmet (no face shield)...most times when you run faster 14.00 you need a full face helmet.....also if a track requires helmets, odds are they win rent them to you for 5-10 bucks.....

you need a helmet no matter how slow you go...NHRA/IHRA made a new rule that if you are quicker then 14 sec, you need a higher grade protection rating and there has to be a face mask on it. so if you're slower then 13.9, you can have like a chopper helmet or an old school nascar helmet and you'll be ok

for that u need to under 14?
so make it under 14sec then you can worry about it.

I need to worry about it now. The drive to the track is 2 hours and if I find out that my car can do 13.9 and lower then I'm pretty much screwed if I don't bring my own helmet. The car should do 13's with the mods that I have and will have by then. If I don't make 13's then I can't drive my car. The car should be capable of hitting atleast 13.9.

Go buy yourself a Snell M2005 rated helmet, that'll get you through all autoxes and most dragstrips. They can be found for around 80-300 dollars, depending on how cheap or expensive you want to go. I also recommend a full face helmet just in case.

That is a perfect helmet for a beginner. Definitely will get you through just about every racing event you want to go to as I have yet to come across an event where I needed a full SA2005 rated helmet.

I have a similar helmet but with skulls and some other crazy art on it (was a birthday gift).

You don't need a helmet for any drag racing as stated..only if you are quicker than 14.0

Last time I went I didn't have one and was told that if I broke the 14.0 time I would be warned and could continue to run without a helmet only if I didn't go faster than 14.0 again.

Yes. I'm really hoping to break into 13's so I better prepare myself if they ask me for helmet. I do not want to drive slower just so I can be in 14's.

I use to race when I was younger, 17. My fastest my was 14.7 and I know it was not capable of runnning 13's so didn't have to worry about helmet. I stopped when I got 23 and moved to RC racing. Now I'm 27 and I'm doing both as my hobby. I want to break into high 12's with drag radial tires and some more mods this summer. Well, that was my plan but we'll see how it goes :)

Thanks for the help guys !

Guess I'm lucky to also ride a motorcycle! I would like to hit up the track this year but doubt I'll be below 14s as my car is still stock...for now. I will bring the helmet just in case, as I didn't know about the new you need to wear some kind of helmet period rule.

What the hell... I just received my helmet today from helmetcity.com. I measured my head the way they said to measure it and for some reason the helmet is so tight. Is this suppose to be like this? I want to put 1 piece of my earphone to talk to my friend on the other end before and while I'm racing but I don't think that little ear phone can fit in there. (ear phone looks almost like ipod's)

Is yours like this too?

WOW, buying a helmet online before trying it on? That's a no no... Head shapes are different, and there are different helmets for each head type.

The Arais were too narrow for me so I got a Shoei. The model I got was the X-eleven, size Xtra large. hehe, The helmet is super light, strong, lots of ventilation, and above all, very comfortable. Of course I tried on the helmet at motorcycle shops before ordering exactly what I wanted online.

My helmet was $440 shipped I believe. yikes

No this was not for autox, but for my new Yamaha R6. I've also used the helmet for go cart racing, and driving my dual sport motorcycle which I just recently sold...

u have seen a couple mustang and some g35/350 use helmets.
but i dont think at ours u need it, since all the drag radial guys dont use them, some do some dont.

plus i dont think the helmet is that necessary with the airbags, ok if they dont come out of stuff like that, you are sht out of luck.
i know on auto-x it happens that the the driver bumps his head on the window or panel, and knock himself out a little, i have seen that happen, at a non official auto-x at home.
