So I just bought my wife an '04 3s hatch with 130k miles and promptly did a full transmission flush via the oil cooler line. Got pretty much all the old fluid out and replaced it with MERCON-5 from autozone. M-5 is just too expensive at my local dealer.
Anyways, after sitting for long enough to cool down it jerks for the shift from 1st to 2nd. After it's warmed up it shifts smooth.

Do I need an additive for the Merc 5 to get it to shift better when cold?

Search, plenty on this subject already. IMO don't go cheap out on fluids especially for the auto trans in these cars. You need m-v compatible fluid. How dark was the old fluid? These trannys need new fluid every 30k. Also I think there is a service bulletin out for shift shock in 1st and 2nd in some earlier model years.
