I have an '04 5 door, and recently the gas mileage has basically been cut in half

i'm lucky to get 10 -12 mpg




any ideas as to what might be causing this?

Cold weather? Prolonged engine idling? "Winter blend" fuel? (we get winter blend year-round in CA [10% ethanol], and I am averaging around 27MPG city/hwy combined since I bought the car)

it happens when i'm driving

i'll get maybe 70 miles or so for half a tank

This may sound weird but it could be your thermostat
causing your car to think its running tooo cold
thus throwing more gas in to make it run hotter?
this was happening to me then i got a new thermostat

That happened once to me in a Taurus. Turned out I had a brake dragging. It was like you could see the gas gage move.
