This is all the info I have gathered from different web sites so far. Please feel free to correct or add.

OEM Mazda3 15-inch:
Width - 6.0 inches
Offset - 52.5mm
Tire size - P195/65R15 H-rated

Stock 16" or 17" rims are 6.5" wide with 52.5mm offset
Bolt Pattern is 5x114.3 (5x4.5)

215/45/17 Tires (205/50/17 Stock) should fit on stock 17x6.5" rims.

These configurations should work.
7.0" rim = ~ 46mm offset
7.5" rim = ~ 40mm offset
8.0" rim = ~ 36mm offset

225/45/17 Tires need at least a 7" rim.

17" x 7.0" ~ 45mm offset with 215/45 R17 works.
17" x 7.0" ~ 45mm offset with 225/45 R17 works.
18" X 7.5" ~ 42mm offset with 225/40/R18 works.

I currently have 215/45's on my stock rims. It looks like it needs a drop, but there is no rubbing. I'm upgrading to 225/45's next year with new rims.

I am currently looking at purchasing wheels that would fit my current vehicle, and that would also fit the Mazda 3. Have scouted out the SSR Comps 16x7.5 offset +42, but that size is not listed for the Mazda3 on tirerack. I notice that all wheels of 16x7.5 width do not go more than +40 offset for the Mazda3. Doesn't make sense to me, since the stock offset is +48? What's more, 17x7.5 wheels can go to +48, according to the tirerack website. Can someone please explain? I wish for my wheel purchase to last beyond this current vehicle to be worth the $$$ the SSRs cost. Would rather purchase 16s compared to 17s for the performance. Thanks.

That's actually not an accurate statement, as there are people here who have successfully mounted those tires on the stock 6.5" wheel's

A better phrase would be:

Most 225/45/17 do not recommend mounting on a rim narrower than 7"

In the Mazda 3 both wheels have the same offsetand width?
Stock 16" or 17" rims are 6.5" wide with 52.5mm offset

Very extrange. Here the full version of the 1.6 come with the rims 16x? (I am not sure) but come with the same size and brand of tire than the Mazda 6 (2.0)

I just ordered some 17" x 7.5" rims and some 225/45/R17 tires....will this work?

Thanks

And the Offset of your 17x7.5?

My mazda 6 came with 16x7. Offset +55mm. I upgrade to 17x7.5 and Offset +48mm and the Tires 225/45 R17.
No problem for me. Maybe with a +40mm or less work with the 225/45
