Exhaust leak

455 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Grendel65
In the past few weeks my exhaust grew noticeably louder and it sounds like a leak might be coming from near the front of the car. Today I looked at the joint between the manifold and the cat and didn’t see any soot or feel hot air coming out. Also look near the manifold the best I could. Are there any tricks to find an exhaust leak or are these cars known to fail somewhere?

Wait until your first start up in the morning. The exhaust will be the loudest at that time because you are on the HO2/O2 sensor open loop so the AFR are slightly rich during warm up.
You should be able to easily find the exhaust leak at that time. But you have only 1-3 minutes to do so before your ECU goes into closed loop operations.
Haven't seen any regular issues with this, do you live in an area that salts the roads?

Did you mean to post in another thread? This is about looking for an exhaust leak on a 2015 Mazda. Not totally sure your thinking about salt on roads and exhaust leaks have in common for any normality? ;)
Not at all, a lot of times I see posts regarding poor exhaust quality and leak issue, the issue is generally due to rust, not an actual vehicle failure. First thing I always ask about.
Back on your comment about salt on roads...OK sure maaaaaaybe in your area not really much on forums as the cause and predominately on older vehicles over 15-20 years old or much older for anything CAT back but.... you did read the noise is up by the engine? ;)
