I have an 06 hatch 2.3 MTX and the engine has this whine that is more noticeable over 4k rpm.
I don't remember it before, but maybe because it is winter and the windows are closed and it is more noticeable.

Is this normal?

Stopped by a dealer and they listened to it and said they are all like that.

It just doesn't sound right.

I will try to describe the whine ...
Everyone knows the steering whine, well it is similar but deeper.
You don't notice it as much at low rpms but can't miss it once you hit 4000.
It sounds like more of an electrical noise rather than the engine, maybe from the alternator or a/c..
Almost sounds like transmission whine, but happens even when not moving...

hmmm...maybe an ACC belt or something. I noticed mine at idle last year with the stereo and AC on whining but its intermittent and 'normal' according to the dealer.

To me it is not a normal sound, but haven't been in many other 3's to tell.
The loaner from Wayne Mazda last time was a 3i.
When I go for my free oil change, and shift boot replacement later in the week I will have them check it again.

I wish you luck, they may say its normal like a ticking manifold I had the first time I went.

Do you have a manual transmission? If so, does the sound go away when you push the clutch in? If you answer yes to both questions, the input shaft bearing on your transmission is going out. Good luck getting them to replace it though.

Just made sure... It happens either with the clutch pushed in or not.

It does sound like some sort of bearing noise though. To be more accurate the whine is really noticed from 3800rpm to redline.

Update...

Going in for service this week and leaving the car..

Whats the chance of them hearing/fixing the prob...
I know they will say it is normal..
Nobody here says they have this whine, so how could it be normal?

you sure its not the VVT?
I got a whine too, sounds like a belt going really fast, not loud, but i hear it.
I got an auto, and i think my whine in the VVT kicking in.

I don't know if it is normal because I haven't been in other 2.3s..
The 2.0 doesn't do it.
Does it becaome more noticeable right before 4000rpm?

i dont even know, but someone said vvt kicks in like at 5000 or 5500.
it could start earlier?

My 3 has a whine that sounds like a really small supercharger spooling up when I pass around 3k rpms in low gears.
