it will be pretty much the same width...except your tire's diameter will be 1.5" smaller, so your speedometer is off by 8%... so when your speedometer shows 60mph you're really moving at 55mph.
You'll also increase your wheel gap, which most people don't like. I would just find another tire that you like that comes in the 205/50/17 size, there are a lot of good tires out there!
Yes I just realized the 40 meant the aspect ratio (sidewall length) and not the width of the tire. So this means that the tire is an even lower profile than the 50... yeah, I probably don't want that...!
If you go with the 40 series you lose alot of "cushion" from the sidewall. You would be more likely to bend/crack a rim going over a pothole. They also let alot of road vibration through. I personally am sticking to the 50 series.
