Easy Engine Swap Options

I have found a decent amount of threads for engine swaps, but none really hitting home for what I'm looking for, HOWEVER if you have a thread that answers this question just post it and I'll shut this one down. Anyways, moving on:

I own a 2006 Mazda3 S hatch with the L3VE 2.3L, but sadly it has horrible piston rings and I was quoted $5,000 for repair due to the amount of labor (assuming the block is okay and the pistons aren't warped). With this said, I have a few shops in my area that can do an engine swap and I'm thinking that'll be the better option: typically cheaper and I'll get more power out of it. Finally, my question is: "What engines fit easily into a BK hatch chassis?" Worst case I'm thinking I do a 1:1, better would be putting in the Speed 3 engine, but if there's other engines that would be even better with little hassle I'd love to hear it! Oh, and let me make this harder: I live in California, so the engine swap has to comply with BAR Regulations and be CARB compliant (I think). I'm thinking literally anything from Cosworth to Honda, Toyota, Nissan, anything that sits right and isn't difficult for a shop to do it.

Thank you for your time. Stay Happy & Healthy

2.5l duratec. It’s fairly direct as it’s the same platform as the 2.3l. A speed3 would require lots of modification and also a speed3 gearbox as well. The duratec you can find for usually under $500.

Looked into it, and seems to be a lot of options and I'm having a hard time figuring out what to look for. I created a thread to help anyone else looking for specifically 2.3L to 2.5L, but would you be able to help there?
2009 2.5L swap - Newb Questions & Follow along

This is a pretty good thread. It goes through the stuff that needs to be swapped over. An adapter plate will need to be used for the 2.3 intake manifold to the 2.5. Since you have an 06 the cam does not need to be swapped over but timing tools will still be needed to swap the crank pulley. Any Ford 2.5 will work and you will have to swap over anything that differs from the 2.3.
