In a weekend coming up, I will be planning a drive around the state of Michigan and I need some guidance in my route in the sense of places to visit, roads to drive on, etc. I don't want to go all over the state mind you since I need to begin in Auburn Hills and end there as well. Plus, I'll be staying with a friend in Ann Arbor, so I am trying to stay withing a few hours of there.

I plan on driving in and around Detriot, down through Ann Arbor, and maybe out to Kalamazoo. I might consider go up north if the driving is better up there.

Give me your thoughts.

I'm not going anywhere near that place in the car I'll be in.

Hmm. Probably should just stay away from Detroit all-together......

Whatever you do, stay FAR away from downtown Ann Arbor during business hours, and especially rush hour. The road system there is a mess, and trying to get out of town at rush hour is a nightmare.

If you want to see AA, go on a Sunday morning.

This will be on a weekend, so I won't have to worry about rush hour.

Do you have any good road suggestions? Maybe a nice stretch of highway or a nice, windy two-lane?

I wouldn't expect to do any great spirited driving in michigan right now, not with 30 degree weather and a million potholes!

The roads here will kill your car :) Keep your eyes peeled for 3-sized potholes... ESPECIALLY if you go near the Ann Arbor Saline Rd/I-94 interchange in AA. I honestly can't think of any "fun" roads around here to drive...

But seriously you should drive around Detroit if you're gonna be here. It's not really as bad as everyone says. If you a have some time and it's decent out, the downtown area is actually pretty nice.

It won't be until the beginning of May.

Won't be my car. It will be something a hell of a lot nicer than my 3. :) Would be a good test of the car though, ride-wise.

There aren't any back roads that travel along the state?? For example, there's Route 30 in Pennsylvania that is a windy, two-lane road that goes from one side of the state to the other. Another example is Rt. 37 here in Ohio that runs from the East side of Columbus to Toledo. Something like that.

I figured there's got to be roads that are a fun drive in Michigan. Not looking for anything like the Dragon's Tail. Just some decent roads to tour the state on.

Honestly the only nice roads I have driven on in MI are up north in BFE. Last summer a took a trip up north in my Jag near Oscoda and there were some sweet 2-lane drives up there. I don't know of anything like that in the southern part of MI. Maybe someone else does.

I figured that was the case. That's a possibility to go up there if it's worth it.

If your looking for a fun road...i got a PERFECT one for you.

West Huron River Drive.

me and my buddy go race on it when its warm...its the sweetest curvy wooded road in the area...

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=20+w.+huron+river+drive,+ann+arbor,+mi&sll=42.299707,-83.746333&sspn=0.00765,0.019226&ie=UTF8&ll=42.299707,-83.746526&spn=0.00765,0.019226&t=h&z=16

The road starts where the marker is...and goes west for a good 15-20 min.

Just get onto 23 north at 94...and get onto 14. Then take 14 to exit 3 and take your first right.

if you want to take a lil drive up a highway... take 75 north to Frankenmuth. While yer up here we'll set up a lil get together with the local Mz3s.

If you want... you can drive thru the hills of Rochester :p nothing like the hills of Pennsylvania like that lil meet you had last year.

A nice little scenic drive go onto Woodward Ave especially when it warms up outside... that lil strip north of I696 turns into a big cruising scene at night.

This is true, I had forgotten about Huron River Drive. It's a nice drive on huron river down by ford lake near Ypsilanti and Belleville too... (or at least it was years ago the last time I was on it. It might be a total death trap now for all I know.)

Sorry, but I'm bumping this. :)

What's the closest airport to Auburn Hills?
[/quote]

Detroit Metro... I think. There's the city airport... but it's not in a safe area, IMO.

Well, if I drive up there, hopefully I can skirt around Motown traffic and construction.

I'm having a tough time figuring this out. Why the place I have to go isn't close to Detroit or Ann Arbor I'll never know. That's my big hang-up since it's exactly four hours and 220 miles from Columbus.

Now you'll get an idea what I went thru to get down there for Indy... Michigan-never-ending-construction.
