I changed my tranny fluid on my 06 2.3 auto a few months back @ about 20k. Replaced it with Mobil 1. My fluid was a dark brown to almost black color it,did not smell burnt though. I have not had any problems with my transmission. Was this a problem, or normal for the Mazda Fluid? The Mobil 1 has remained a nice bright red since the change(been 5k). For those of you that have done your own change, what has been your experience? If you could, post mileage at change.
Thanks..

I did my first drain like you at 20k. It was nearly black. Ever since I have used Mobil 1 and it has been red everytime. I don't think the factory fluid (motorcraft I'd imagine) is very good, espcially with the heat given by these transmissions. The mobil can take extreme heat much better, and assume you keep a close eye on it should give your transmission plenty of extra life. I feel sorry for the people who got 50-60k on this car with the original fluid still swimming in there.

I did a partial flush (double 3qt flush) at like 17-20k miles, then I did a full 9qt flush all at once using transmission pump at like 23k miles.

Here's my fluid just before I did my full 9qt flush:

Then I was wondering if heat was a cause of this color change due to the small water type ATX fluid cooler, so I added an auxillary cooler. I'll keep track of my fluid every 3k miles or so and see if the cooler keeps mine looking bright red.

How did all that mud get into your tranny? JK

Most vehicles would have better-looking ATF after 200K!

Haha, I was staring at that second to last pic of HouRman's for about 30 seconds wondering how the hell he got the fluid to bend like that as it was draining.. then I realised it was a tube.

i just replaced the MTX tranny fluid at 31K...fluid came out dark brown/blackish. i was surprised cuz when i changed the tranny fluid on my 99 honda civic at 20K it was almost as good as new.

definitely not going to follow the maintenance sched in the mazda3 owners manual.

i'll be replacing the ATX fluid in my wife's car this week. her car has 27K...i'll see what color fluid comes out...

Or if it's even still considered a fluid. After 27,000 miles, it might be closer to a solid! :p
