So I don't have a garage, and the temperature just went from an average of 55-60 degrees F to about 25-30 in about one week. My next oil change is creeping up on me, and I'm pretty adamant about doing any minor maintenance myself, especially oil changes (I used to drive heaps that went straight to Jiffy Lube... things are different now!)

My question is, are there any good tips for making oil changes in freezing cold weather a more tolerable experience? Not neccessarily for my comfort, but for the sake of the car, like running the engine to warm up the oil, etc?

Drive around the block a few times. You want it running freely. And if it's reaaally cold out, you'll love that lukewarm stuff that feels great, smells like scalded flesh. :D

Also, keep your tools inside overnight to let them keep SOME heat. Buy Mechanics gloves if you dont have some already.

Icy cold tools, extremely hot engine. Not fun :)

Go get a sample square of carpet- usually no more than like 4$ for about a meter or meter and a half square usually. Lay it down to keep yourself off the cold, cold concrete. As mentioned, some mechanic gloves may be nice for handling the tools, but theyre gunna be covered in oil if you dont take it off before pulling the drain plug or actualyl removing the filter. Bring your tools in over night, maybe run scalding hot water over them for a few minutes before you go out (make sure to dry them really well) to help warm them up some. I also suggest a space heater aimed towards you while you work :)

[/quote] You don't need a garage, just someone who has one. Tell them you want to use their garage for 1 hour and you will totally clean up everything. Offer to buy pizza or just bring over a six pack to show your appreciation, or offer to change their oil for them. I'm sure they will be willing to help you out + it's a win - win for both parties!! :D :D :D

That sure would be nice, but everyone I know around here who is lucky enough to have a garage, fills it with years of clutter instead of cars. And the people I know who are my age are all too destitute to have houses. Oh well, it's the street for me!

Anyway, thanks for the tips fellas.
