Check Engine Light On

1371 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  sweetface
Light came on today. Was driving about 40 mph on 3rd gear. Dropped to 2nd to pass a guy and I lost RPMs all of a sudden. Car didn't turn off, but RPMs came back and so the check engine light came on.
Possible O2 Sensor problem? Suggestions?
They don't do Free Diagnostic Tests here at the local Auto places. How much should a diagnostic test run? I don't want to get ripped off.

Are you still under warranty ? then it should be free at a Dealership.

You can dissconnect the Battery and reset the computer, if the CEL comes back you got a issue, but if it does not , you should be ok.
My friend, Alex, has his own diagnostic machine. Its like a mini-version he got off eBay. well the did only said "error". The Check engine Light is off now so I'm just going to wait to see what happens.
Any OBDII diagnostic tool should be able to tell you the actual error code... even my $20 eBay one does. Something along the lines of "PXXXX" where XXXX is the error number. If it comes back, try to get the code pulled, that will give you a good idea of what's wrong.
Yeah he had his little booklet with him, but the only thing that came up was "error". No code, no nothing. So I'm being extra careful and hoping the light doesn't come on again.
MAF wires maybe? If you still have the Injen CAI shown on your CarDomain and the wires are tight, that could have been the culprit. Downshifting and the engine rocking...makes some sense. If the CEL is gone for now it shouldn't be too bad.
Thank you for the input. I saw that light come on and I thought it was the kiss of death!
