Car bogs, sputters/flutters and smoke rolls out the exhaust..happened twice now.

I'm starting this thread because the situation described in the thread title has happened to me twice now.

The first time was in sixth gear a few months ago on the highway just like the OP described.

The second time was tonight after I short-shifted to second gear and then went WOT.

There's a distinct flutter/spudder noise, accompanied by smoke out the exhaust (not sure of the color, as it was nighttime both times it happened).

The car also falls on it's face (feels like there's no boost). The problem resolves itself after lifting the throttle (re-application of the throttle after lifting briefly resulted in normal acceleration both times).

Is this some sort of wastegate issue maybe?

My car has 17K on it, and the only mods are CS transaxle mount inserts and a Cobb SRI.

you are describing a boost leak imo, check your inlet pipe connections, especially on the turbo side. check all your intercooler hoses and clamps. i used to get sputters until i realized my inlet clamp was loose and it was barely hanging on to the turbo....

Thanks. I give them a thorough checking over today. Hopefully that's the issue.

The only thing that gives me pause with that theory is that it's only happened twice, months apart from one another...I would think a boost leak situation would be more persistent/consistent...
Have you had the fuel pump TSB done? Sounds like you might be losing FP pressure causing it to bog down and hesitate. Do you have a monitoring device?
Nope, no monitoring device.

This car has never been to a dealer for anything since I bought it new over a year ago...It was built in August of '07. Perhaps I should schedule a dealer visit...
They won't do shit unless they can replicate it. You could be getting knock and the car may be pulling timing and closing the throttle. Without a datalog its impossible to tell what the problem is.
Hate to bring up and older thread but, I seem to be having a similar problem.

I can best recreate the problem if I am taking a turn from a stop. (i.e. taking a left or a right at an intersection) If I accelerate, the car will run fine until it reaches about 3-4K rpms (right when it gets into boost). Car spudders, and just seems like I hit redline but I'm definitely not there yet...

I had a MBC installed for a while. The problem started to happen after I had switched my BOV from VTA to recirc. Seemed strange... I thought I had adjusted something wrong... After I switched it to Recirc, the car would not go past 10psi. I took off the MBC and nothing changed, just 10psi, any gear.

I'm thinking it's the wastegate, but I'm really not sure. Anyone have any idea?
(by the way, all my vac hoses are on tight. I triple checked it.)

I tried to research this a bit and this is the closest thread to my issue that I've found. Let me know if there's something newer out there.
Well, I have the ability to log now, but the car hasn't done this again at all, let alone while I've been datalogging.

I don't know what the Hell it was...

Make sure you hooked up the vacuum lines right. Sounds like you are running wastegate pressure only which is 10psi on our car. When you hooked up the MBC you should have removed one vacuum line (to the factory boost controller) and capped it off. Then you spliced into the line going from the bottom of the WG to the Turbo (if my memory is correct, it has been a while sense I ran an MBC).

So when you removed the MBC, then you replace the bottom line on the WG and needed to uncap the other line and reconnect it or you would be running off of WG only with no factory boost controller as you have it capped off.

Hope that helps.
Sorry, forgot to mention this.

When I originally had the MBC on (it is off now) I was running upwards of 17-18psi. Then the day I switched from VTA to recirc is when I experienced the 10psi only problem.
The MBC is off now and everything is rewired like stock.
However, only 10psi in all gears. I remember getting 14-15 in gears 4-6.

Oh and I'm getting a CEL, which started around the same time.
P2148 I think. I ran it and it said "Too Rich at Idle"
Don't know if they're connected but the more information I throw out, the better someone can understand what's going on. :-D
