hi, i own a 2004 Mazda3i, and i just wanna know if its OK to redline a couple of times? Or how long would I be able to redline without worrying about an explosion or something? I wanna be able to push the car to its limits, but am afraid to redline for long, let alone even get in the red area.

I'm pretty sure the engine is rev-limited, THAT is what you want to avoid. Although you shouldn't take any engine into the redline every time you shift, doing so during moments of raped-ape-travel is not horrible. However, there is no point to shift AFTER the engine is done making peak power, as I don't know the exact numbers for this, hopefully someone else will supply them. If the engine is makes peak power a little into the redline, you'll most likely be shifting around there.

However, if that is the case, you're going to want to be very precise -- if you miss a gear or over-rev, you've got less wiggle room.

If I'm wrong, please correct me.

cars explode all the time when you redline!

its pretty self explanatory. Drive the car, learn for yourself. Of course being in red means more wear on the car and possibly broken parts depending on how long you keep it in red. But cars need to be driven rough every once in awhile.

LISTEN to your engine. It will tell you when you need to shift.

keep pushing that 3 to the limits and you might be looking for a new car sooner than you thought.

Drive it hard once in a while just make sure the engine is fully warmed up before you do so...when I say warmed up I am not referring to the tempature gauge...about 10-15 minutes will be ample though before you drive it rough.

And yes your car will explode...that sound coming out of your exhaust is thousands of explosions each minute...redling will not hurt a car that much at all you just dont want to get in the habit of doing it all the time.

The 2.0 and 2.3 both makes max power at 6500rpm so shift around there. :)

Makes no sense to take it to 7100rpm the you can feel the drop in power after 6500rpm.

Reving to 6500rpm will not hurt the motor especially if the manufacture design the motor to make max power at that rpm it's safe to take it there.

Actually, you want to hold it in the lowest gear for as long as possible. Even though the engine might make more power if you were to upshift, the gear ratio is large enough that your actual acceleration will be greater than in the next gear. That's be benefiet of cars like the RX-8, you could shift at 6500 RPMs, but you can hold it until 9000, and that is much faster.
