They're wrong. There's a lot of incorrect info on the Mazda3 on the web. In Europe, the Mazda6's2.3L puts out 166HP (I believe) so maybe they're quoting this???

Thats funny because one Mag I read stated that the Mazda3 hp started at 150 up to 180!? I knew something wasn't right about that. The 2.0 base model 150 but a 2.3 with 180! Damn. Must be a miss print. Lets hope they are not going to make the same mistake like they did with the miata and RX-8.

I saw that. So now I've seen 150, 160, and 170hp. I'd be happy with any of them instead of the current 130. :)

There is no 170HP engine in NA on the 6 or 3.

The 166HP in Europe and Japan NEEDS 95octane gas!!! But the I4 2.3L in the Mazda3 takes 87regular.

Am I the only one impressed by these numbers? lol

160HP from a I4 that uses unleaded regular and get's good gas mileage is a big plus for the car. Better than the Zetec or even Ecotec engines (130, 140 respectively) and even saves a bit more gas than both last time I checked. Similiar HP cars like the Sentra SE-R and Focus SVT recommends premium fuel.

They seem pretty confident with
"Engine choices will be a 150-hp 2.0-liter and the 2.3-liter four-cylinder from the Mazda 6, upgraded to 170 horsepower."

I guess we'll have to wait and see what Mazda says.

Even still, if you put it in perspective, the 2003 MazdaSPEED Protegé had 170 hp, now this non-turbocharged 3 will have 160.

exactly! I'm very impressed with the numbers on this engine. I was in the market for an SVT Focus, and Sentra SE-R Spec V, and Mazdaspeed Protege, all have similiar HP numbers but all needed premium fuel (or recommended).

confirmed U.S. specs via mazda's spec sheets say:

i model (2.0L) -
148 hp @ 6500 rpm (PZEV = 144 hp @ 6500 rpm)
135 lb/ft @ 4500 rpm (PZEV = 132 lb/ft @ 4500 rpm)

s model (2.3L) -
160 hp @ 6500 rpm
150 lb/ft @ 4500 rpm

all models will run on regular unleaded.

My guess is C&D was quoting the Japan-spec 2.3, which *is* upgraded to 171 ps=169 hp. That probably requires premium fuel though.

Hey just got back from the B&N store and came across another MotorTrend Mag that stated that the Mazda 3 will have a 180hp 2.3L,. WTF. Could they just make up their minds. Its either 160 or 180.

it's 160 for sure on the u.s. spec 2.3L. mags are usually a bit behind..especially if they just put out an issue right before mazda has released official specs/pricing.

Well Mitsu has the 162/162 Lancer Ralliart in the US so 160/151 Mazda3 is about right. Of course if/when a MazdaSpeed3 will arrive it will have more oomph than the Lancer.
