I am guessing the amount of lag with this bigger turbo will only narrow the torque band even more. While more power is better most of the time, you would almost have to pre-intercooler spray this thing to get it to spool up fast enough... or get some longer gears to use the power. It looks like a nice upgrade, but I'm not sure the money is worth the 1 second of 1/4 mile time. I do like garrett's work though. I wonder how much a Cobb tuning piece can help this thing.
i think a big garrett turbo, gt28 and gt30, like that would be a good upgrade.. ya a little more lag, but it all depends on how you drive your car...

if you autox, keep the stock or small turbo upgrade, if you race in a straight line, get a big garrett cause even if it doesnt spool til 4500rpms and only holds til 7k.. it will still be faster.. gt35r im pretty sure would need a built motor to get the full potential, so kind of a waste of money IMO.

i think the only thing cobb could do to tune this, is if the cobb ap was installed and the street tuner software was used.. unless they decide make specific maps in the future for an exact turbo, exact size injectors, and exact intake.. then you could just upload the map they provide
I'm not too sure there's going to be anything to worry about with these turbos, lag wise. Yeah, they're bigger, but those ball bearing GT set ups are supremely responsive. I'm not a fan of a bigger turbo on these cars, really, but I'd expect the GT28 to be a pretty good match.
is the DI fuel injection system capable of providing enough fuel for 400-600hp?
i highly doubt it, you will most likely need to upgrade your injectors, i'm sure you can run with stock but IDC's will be maxed out and you definately wont be able to make much power
yes. quite easily from what I'm seeing. it's a totally different beast than port injection.
would mazda really put that big of fuel injectors in stock?
There was a dyno of this turbo upgrade on a MS6 posted before on another forum and there was plenty of fuel. Although IDC was not logged. There was actually too much fuel in certain spots and tuning is definately needed.

I don't think its the size that matters for the DISI engine. From reading the speed6 forums it looks like a fuel cut will be our biggest problem if we switch out the turbos to increase boost. Some members over there have already installed this upgrade and so far tuning and fuel cut are the major obstacles.
the thing is, you don't really need to increase boost pressure so much as improve the amount of airflow (cfm) at the same given pressure (psi). Big turbos flow a hell of a lot more than the stocker even at the same pressure and are usually able to hold the full amount of boost at higher engine speeds as well.
TXS said they're biggest problem tuning so far is that when they raised the boost to 18psi on the stock turbo it slams into fuel cut real quick, they said we need that standalone management to come out so we can tune around it.
Sounds like they needed one of these. A quick/cheap fix to fuel cut

Here is a thread of a MS6 owner installing the ATP upgrade. Its pretty detailed (by that i mean long) but an interesting read:
