I had a CEL at 800 miles, then at 2100, then at 4,000 miles. The first was the 2ndary shutter valve sticking, the 2nd was the purge valve, the 3rd was the shutter valve again. So..... the dealer just called me and said I'm one of the 1st to receive the updated secondary actuator valve that mazda just sent them...... any one else hear about this fix?

Could you elaborate on what the ‘shutter valve’ is? Is it the same thing as the intake manifold runner control valve? I’m having an issue with my car when it’s cold… maybe the same issue???

right you are dread... and one bonus to having to wait until march/april to get your car
as hopefully all the updates will be applied to assembly line. that will make mine a 2007.5 :)
they did the same thing with the svt contour. there were so many bugs, in the 98 year, they made changes and advertised the car as a 98.5.

sounds familiar... http://www.mazda3forums.com/index.php?topic=67119.0

i just hope that this is the first and last fix of the shutter valve in mine.
I'm @ 3900 miles and had a CEL come on yesterday. It's going to the Dealer Tomorrow
3700 miles and a CEL... I asked the dealer about the shutter valve specifically and if they have heard of this issue, but still bringing it in this weekend
CEL yesterday while making a bank run for work... it was pretty chilly here in GA and probably why I got it... shutter valve. dealer explained that something sticks when temp in the intake manifold is less than 140 degrees and that causes the ecu to think it;s not working, but it really is. they did the previous adjustment, said there were only 9 of the updated replacement shutters in the US and i will get it if i get another CEL for the same reason. also said he's not sure if they'll eventually make it a recall. apparently it's happened a lot with their cx-7's and i'm the first speed3 they've seen with that problem. guess i'll just have to wait for the purge valve to go bad next.
also had them check my motor mount on the transmission side, all looks good.
a little peeved, opened up the hood and some of the fins on the intercooler are bent flat. bleh
My CEL went off today after being on the past 2 days and by the time I got to Columbus, Ga from Newnan, Ga (about 1hr) the dealer couldn't find anything wrong with it. Oh well I still got my oil changed and a tank of gas.
Well I went into service today and they installed the updated shutter valve actuator. They said it was the only one mazda sent them and that they put it in because its my 3rd CEL. It was only comming on when it got really cold out, as in less than 30 degrees outside. Hopefully this will be my last trip to the dealer!
I got the new part also today after 3 times in for the same CEL code. Each time it happened it was around freezing so maybe this is the REAL fix. We will see........
Kep us posted and keep us posted. Any noticable driving differences?
Anyone have a part number?

My dealer called someone at Mazda, who told him there was no such part. It’s been in the shop twice and the mechanic is pretty sure this is the problem. Given the current weather, this is really bugging me – my car always dies first thing in the morning, usually more than once before it stays running. After that I get to spend at least five minutes driving the car while the motor misses and bucks. My old 1966 Ford Galaxie was never this bad during cold weather and it had a carburetor sans choke.

I called Mazda today; no help there. Is this typical Mazda service? I can’t believe nobody can tell me that either a) the part is available or b) the part is not available but we’re working on it. Instead, I’m getting c) your car’s broken, we don’t know if Mazda is working on a solution, and we can’t tell you for certain that Mazda is even aware this problem exists, but feel free to call back in a month or so and ask us again, or just learn to live with it (which I have been asked).

I would go to a different dealership and I wouldn't drive my car while its in that condition, you may be doing damage.
Hi I brought in my car this morning, they turned of the light....WOW.... I did that 2 month ago with the battery!
They told me mazda canada is issuing a service bulletin regarding cel in cold weather. Then they sent me home : (
Anyways what a joke... Hope your cel doesn't come back.
Just want to get mine fixed once and for all. I really love my speed.
Matt.
Oh where are you from, and was it cold outside for your cel also ???

The first time I had a problem it was pretty cold - maybe 15-20 degrees F. It died twice and ran pretty rough for a minute or so. Then it got worse... now any time it's below 40 degrees it will die about 3-4 seconds after startup. If it's really cold the engine will die 2-3 times. After that, the engine really runs rough until it's fairly close to operating temp. If I stay on it, at about 3,000 RPMs or perhaps a bit more things smooth out nicely. My mechanic is convinced that I have a problem with my IMRC, but Mazda told him today that there's no fix. So, I was instructed to basically do nothing. And that's exactly what I'm not going to do. Seriously, I think Mazda is dropping the ball on customer service. Last time I took the car in, Mazda (corporate Mazda) told me to try 87 octane fuel. That didn't seem to make any difference.

I'm in Denver, Colorado by the way. Temps have been below freezing for some time now, and I'm at 5,300 feet elevation. I'm not sure if that makes the problem worse.

I never noticed the car running any different, but the CEL did come on when it was about 15-25 degrees out here in Minneapolis.

Mathman:

Your car has much bigger problems. Take your car to a different dealer - show them the problem and then park it on their lawn and demand them to fix it. Do not accept what this dealer is telling you - I would be pissed beyond belief
