Alrighty...it's really really hard to find the winning blue Mazda3s in the next 4 states. Who'd have thought? So they asked me to drop the ABS package so they could search again. How important is ABS?

Lemme know.

i though ABS was a standard part of the "S" trim level. If you talking about an "i", I don't know about those options.

I had to go through a lot of crap to get ABS and the moonroof/6cd in winning blue. The dealership ended up having to trade with another dealership to get it. I would say wait and get the ABS or choose another color that has the ABS because it comes w/ the side impact curtains and all those good safety things, so you'll be happy you got it if you ever need it.

According to the car sales man, "These are compact, they don't need ABS."
Haha, he's full of shit. The fact that they are compact, even more reason to have ABS and Side Airbags. With all the SUVs and trucks out there, you better have everything available in your arsenal ready to save your life.

In case you don't know, ABS stands for Anti-lock Braking System, which mean the brake system also including the tires won't be locked when heavy braking. For safty point, it is a good idea cause you can maintain steering. When you have to brake hard especially on snow or ice, you won't lock up your front tires and can be steered to a safer place.
A lots of people misunderstand ABS can shorten the stopping distance, it could be on some road, but again the most important point is you can steer the car.
In Canada, we need to have Sport Package for ABS, so same as the US version

I would recommend getting the ABS. This is my first ABS equipped car, and I tryed it out on a greasy wet road when I got the car... there was no way I would have been able to safely pull the car up in the distance I did without ABS.

You never know when some idiot will pull out in front of you in the wet!

BTW, in Australia, Mazda takes a strong stance on safety with most of its models having 6 airbags and ABS standard, and its a cheap option for those that dont (the base model 2 and base model 3)

In the 3 range, all but the base model (with twin airbags) have full airbags and ABS standard, so for me it wasnt a problem cause the car just came with it. If it didnt, I would have still waited for ABS if I had to.

I think that when it comes time to sell ABS will be important. More and more buyers in this country are looking for it on smaller and smaller cars.

Just my bit!

ABS is optional on both the S and the I, though i'd prefer ABS. you still get pretty good braking with the 4wheel disc brakes, but in emergency situations ABS will help a lot. TCS would've been nice too, but if you want that you'd have to go up to the mazda6. i believe the ABS is available as a stand alone option in the US. if you want Xenon HIDs you'll have to get Sport package + ABS.

ABS. I've been driving 30 years. I never owned a car with ABS until a 98 and 00 Jetta. Couldn't tell you if ABS worked or not. Both Mazda 3's I own now are not equiped with ABS. Can't say I miss it. They both stop quickly and without lockup. IMHO If you learn the limits of the braking system on your car you can live without it .

I consider myself lucky :)

I know what you mean mean, look at my sig and thats how lucky I got. I walked into the dealer and told them what I wanted, they had everything but 1 option, the Xenon/TPMS Pkg on order from japan. And then they even said they could add it, no problem. My expression was... It's like the car was made for me! :D

Hope you get the stuff you want on a Winning Blue.

wow, the salesman told me xenon had to be purchased with the sport package & ABS package. even on the mazdausa.com website, when you config your 3 and choose xenon HID, the other 2 packages get added by default. if they can add xenon later...hmm...

Yeah you misunderstood...

Wait, they said they could add the HID/TPMS after the car reached the dealership? I sincerely hope I misunderstood, because otherwise your dealership sucks, and is truly misleading you.
Nooo! Even though they already had it on order from Japan, it had not been built yet, and they said it would be no problem for them to contact Japan and they would add to the list of options to be installed on the car. Yeah you misunderstood, gosh would that suck if they had to add the Xenon/TPMS on at the dealer, I wouldn't feel comfortable with that type of operation. Anyway, its cool they could call Japan and add it to the car before it was built.

I thought Xenon/TPMS was a factory-only option? At least that's what my dealer told me ...

Back on the ABS thing, in the US the ABS comes with SAB. Now I wasn't for or against the ABS since I've never had them before and hence don't feel strongly either way, but I did want the SAB, so I didn't really have a choice.

ABS can be a problem if you know how to emergency stop -- some people instinctively let up on the pedal when the ABS kicks in since it feels like the wheels have locked. So they're pumpong and the ABS is cutting the brakes out, which only serves to increase the braking distance.

Didn't they pass a new law that will mandate SAB in the US by 2008? Did I hear correctly that this is a retrospective law and will require people to add them to their old cars, not just new? Surely not ... ?

I had no problem finding a winning blue with everything except nav and Xenon/tpms. Actually, I didn't go looking for the blue one, but when I saw it I couldn't resist.

As for the ABS, I wouldn't own a car without it. SO many manufacturers offer it as standard on their more expensive models that it must be worth it. I'll bet that the sales person wouldn't tell someone buying an RX-8 that it didn't need ABS, and I believe that the 8 is lighter, due to the tiny engine.

Bottom line is that if you want something be willing to wait for it. Don’t let the sales person convince you that you should give up an option that you really want. Make them play by your rules.

I definitely agree with the above post. If you don't get a feature that you want now, you'll kick yourself as long as you own the car for being impatient. Just get ready for a sizable wait, since it seems like the backlog for cars with popular options is extensive, though not as long as the lists for a loaded Toyota Prius. Just try and find one of those fully loaded in the Los Angeles area. Go on, I dare you. Ok, back on topic, I hope your car has all that you want in it, so you don't regret it down the line and are completely satisfied.

I actually love finally having a car without ABS. On the rough roads around the NYC area my old car brake pedal would constantly jitter going over the smallest pot hole. That's a thing of the past now... and greatly adds to the confidence of driving. Namely because you feel in control again.

If you have ABS then you know when it turns on. In all my years of owning a car with ABS it has never turned on in an extreme/emergency braking condition. The only time you feel it is if you're braking while going over a dip in the road or when you slam on the brakes to see if the roads are slick.

Anyway... I'm not totally against ABS. It's a good feature for most and hopefully the only time it gets used is when it saves your life. In the end if you're unsure of your driving ability or if you've ever had an accident I'd recommend ABS.
