I noticed that the oil has been changed in my MS6 before I bought it (Certified pre-owned with 2059 miles on it) so out of curiosity, I called the dealer to find out what oil they put in it. He told me Quaker State 5W-20. My manual says 5W-30 is required, regardless of climate. I've been searching around on this forum and I've found a couple of MS3 guys stating they have a 'sticker' in their manuals allowing the use of 5W-20. I just want to find out what my car should have in it, and make a change if necessary. I've been told 2 different things by 2 different dealerships this morning, and Mazda Customer Service is closed today, which is where I originally planned to find the answer to this question.

Anyone have a concrete answer? I know if anything happens, my dealer is responsible...but that's a fried turbo is a scenario I rather avoid altogether. I had planned to convert over to 5W-30 synthetic at the next OCI, but if I need to get this QS 5W-20 out of there, I'll do it tonight.

Thanks guys
Charlie

5w-30 for turbo applications as stated in our owners manual
the website is wrong, the dealers are wrong, the owner manual is correct

considering you live in hot climate its even more important

Get this...the service manager just called me back and left me a voicemail to apologize for the mis-information I was given this morning. He stated he keeps 5W-20 and 5W-30 on hand, and his techs have been trained to use the 5W-30 in Mazdaspeed cars...therefore, my car received 5W-30. Guess what..I'm saving that voicemail to a tape recorder for future use.

This is EXACTLY why I do my own maintenance. Who the hell really knows what's in the car. Having to wonder is what sucks. I'm tempted to go home and change it after work.

I don't have the luxury of a garage or a lift so I have them do the oil change, but I still provide the oil which is 5W30 like the manual says.

I don't do extended drains so the stock filter is good enough for me.

I ran into the same issue with the dealership putting in 5W20 and not the correct 5W30 (as per owners manual). I know they know the difference between a Mazda 3 and a Mazdaspeed 3!!! HELLO... TURBO!!! As soon as I say my name they know it is a Speed 3 since it is the only one in the city and they would not sell me the one of their lot so I got it somewhere else. Now that might have something to do with it as well but I do not have to get it serviced at Mazda! In the manual where the page is for the oil specs it does have a sticker covering those 2 pages and show both non-turbo and turbo oil weights 5W20 and 5W30 respectively. Oh and this is the Canadian manual!

Anyways getting back on topic!

They put in 5W20 the first 2 changes and just regular oil and requested a 8000Km change interval. Once I noticed this (Thinking they knew what they were doing the first 3 times) I asked and they looked into it and said the Speed 3 does require 5W30. So the next time I went in for a change I bought my own oil! Something that will treat my car the way it should be treated!!! I bought ELF Syntheic 5W40 (Making sure my Turbo gets what it needs for cooling) it is a bit pricy but worth every penny!!! I have heard ELF is the best! I will tell you in a few months when I do a few more oil changes.

So yeah you need 5W30 but it would not hurt to have 5W40.

I just got off the phone with my dealer's service dept. manager, and he told me they use a 5W20 synthetic blend. I was thinking of just asking them to put in 5W30, but am starting to get worried that they'll just say they'll put it in and then use the 5W20 instead. I'm leaning towards doing it myself now, but I have a service dept. credit that I wanted to use up. Argh!

That 5w 20 semi synth sounds like motorcraft. That's what the factory fill was in the Mazda 6. Anyway I doubt using 5w 20 will hurt anything but based on my own little research and what some members have verified for fact, 5w 30 is the recommended oil for the speed3. And it's old news that many dealers out there are totally clueless and as a result, will more than likely put 5w 20 into a speed3 thinking it's a regular 3. I'm lucky that the two dealers I use seem to know their stuff.

I am going to tell them to put in 5w30....if I have issues and they say it was because of me instructing them to put in the wrong oil (would never happen) I will just point out what is written in my manual, which is 5w30 for 2.3 turbo.

After the horror stories I've heard about technicians stealing customers' bring-in oil and putting dealership oil in their cars, I prefer to just do it myself. The Ford dealership I take the Sport Trac to has huge bay windows one floor up, overlooking the entire service department that you can see from the showroom. You can see anything and everything a tech is doing to your car. If that was the case at Mazda, I MIGHT let them do my oil changes. Since it's like pulling teeth to even get them to let you walk back there, I'll do it myself.

I just bought a case of AMSOIL 5W20 and took the oil to the dealer and had them do my 1st oil change. The dealer and my manual both state 5W20 as the correct oil, so that's what went in.

thats what i experienced with my factory fill. i checked it the day i took it home and it was dead nuts on the full mark. i checked it again a few weeks later and it was a 1/4" or so above the full mark. something is screwey with the dipstick readings. i did my first change a few weeks ago and 6 quarts put it on the dead nuts full mark and hasn't wavered from it yet.

Oil expands as it heats up. On my old Porsche, I have to get the car up to operating temp (190 degrees), then check the opil with the engine running and the car level. I'm guessing that the oil heats up and expands and it's always better to have to add a little oil than to overfill. Overfilling can cause serious problems (blown seals, etc...).

My manual says 5W30. I doubt it makes a huge difference. I do know that were I to make a decision based on the temp buildup difference between the MZ and the MS (the MZ 3 uses 5W20) I would definitely want 5W30. Forced injection motors are efficient ovens.

At 6 k miles my engine oil now looks like it would have in my MZ3 with 3 k on it. In effect, there is FAR less darkening than in the first few changes. This surprised me.

My manual and the Mazda online manual for the MazdaSpeed3 list the recommended oil as 5W20. I had the Mazda dealer put AMSOIL 100% synthetic 5w30 oil in my car today (4888 miles total, 3008 since last oil change) and I had them put AMSOIL 75/90 100% synthetic fluid in the manual trans. I just checked the online owner's manual on the Mazda website today and it still shows 5w20 as the recommended oil. Where does it say "5w30"? Thanks!

This has been posted before, but since this is the "Definitive" thread here goes: The on-line manual is the first release, it has been updated with new info. If your manual says the same, it is an early one too. The current manual, as well as the factory service manual says 5w20 for the NA engines, 5w30 for the turbo engines.

(Still watching Cashmere?)
