The tires I'm looking at don't come in the stock 205/50/17 size. Any opinions regarding advantages / disadvantages between the sizes listed in the subject line would be appreciated.

You'll be about 1.2 MPH off on your speedo. You'll be fine but I would go 225/45 as it's closer to the stock OD.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that 225/45s will fit on a stock 6.5" wheel. :dunno:

I'm also interested in comparing the two. Seems like adding height (over the stock tire size) would be better than subtracting it, for traction, protecting your rims, and not over reporting the number of miles you've driven. However, I can also imagine that you would get better gas mileage with the smaller tire. Smaller tires are cheaper, right? What do people think? Would there be a noticeable difference in traction or handling?

Yeah, 205 is about the widest you could get away with on a 6.5" wheel

Other car manufacturers have been running 215's on a 6.5" wheel for years. 215 is more than fine. 225 is a bit of a stretch for everyday driving.

I have 215/50/17's on my car & haven't had any problems. Other than the speedo being off a bit, it is still close to stock.

Plus you're putting LESS miles on your car! The wheels are 1.6% taller - fewer revolutions per mile.

Question, if my stock is 205/50/17, How will increasing my width to 215/50/17 affect my speedo? Since its not adjusting the height/profile of the tire.

It is adjusting the height.

215 means it's 215mm wide, 50 means that the sidewall is 50% of the width, so 50% of 215. 17 is the rim size in inches.

If you shop at Tire Rack, once you've selected a tire, go to the 'specs' section. It will provide the suggested specs for each of the available tire sizes, including rim width.

Also remember that every manufacturer is different also. I had a set of 215/50-17's that rubbed at lock.

Also I run 225/45 Nexens as my summer tire and I have no issues... except great performance. :)
