Well, I should have seen this coming. Got it all together and no start with a P0340. Verified cam timing was dead on. This 2007 has the older camshaft with 5 teeth on it. Not sticking an old used camshaft in this basically new motor. Bit the bullet and ordered a new cam from the dealer. $330.

Actually kinda glad I did have to take the front cover back off. I found this mark that wasn't there before and looks like it was from the timing chain. It's really slight, but it's fresh contact. Compared it to the Fusion cover and the Ford one doesn't have this rib. Looked up the cover this morning and it's unique to the 2006-2007 5. I clearanced it really well and cleaned the cover big time afterwards.

Took it out for its maiden voyage and it runs and drives great. Did have to cut the test drive short as the temp got too high. I knew I'd have to keep an eye on the temp as the old engine got hot when it failed (melted junkyard warranty heat tab). Could be a air pocket but probably needs a radiator. Weather went to crap so further inspection and diagnosis will have to wait but it's a runner! Forgot how much I missed having a manual transmission.

Try to use FL22 coolant. Peak OET Asian Green is an equivalent. AutoZone has the concentrate for $25/gallon, and then pick up a gallon of Distilled water for $1 from the grocery store. (Not spring water!)

Got OAT in it. Did take a couple cold-hot-cold cycles but we did get it to take more coolant and on a 40 mile trip the coolant temp bounced between 190 and 196 the whole time which is the thermostat open temp. Bonus the monitors ran so she's ready for smog.

How are you monitoring your temps? In the wife's MZ5, I installed a Kenwood head unit and the iDataLink Maestro RR, which allows her to have full gauges right on the radio screen.

Passed smog. Only trouble was the young service writer who apparently can't drive stick. Got the tags at AAA and we're all legal. Definitely going to post a new thread going over both swaps as they were definitely a bit different.
