Mazda will recall about 30,000 of its newly redesigned Mazda6 sedans due to a defect that could allow the doors to open while the car is travelling at speed.

In a defect notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Mazda explains, "On certain Mazda6 vehicles, due to inconsistent dimension combination between the outer door handles and its brackets, the outer door handles may stick which may prevent the door from latching. This situation may allow the door to open while the vehicle is in motion."

The recall does not affect every 2009 Mazda6, just those built at a certain plant during a certain time period. The VINs of affected vehicles end with numbers between M00057 and M36656.

Mazda began notifying owners of recalled Mazda6 sedans through the mail late last week. Mazda dealers will inspect the door handles of recalled vehicles, and if necessary, replace door handles and brackets free of charge. Owners who wish to make repair arrangements on their own can contact Mazda at 800-222-5500.
