Today my check engine light came on (have not had it read yet), and within a few minutes the engine started knocking very loudly. I immediately pulled over and as I came to a stop, the engine died and smoke started pouring out of the hood.

-I have not attempted to restart the motor, got it towed home
-There is no coolant in the reservoir
-Still oil in the car
-No other warning lights besides check engine light
-Temp gauge was normal when it died

My initial thought is a blown head gasket, but would that cause an engine knock right away?

Any thoughts are appreciated. I'll be diving in later this week to diagnose further, just looking for some thoughts before I start. Thanks!

Based upon what you wrote above, it sounds like it is time for a new motor. There are a few threads here which deal with replacing the Mazda motor in your car with a more powerful and more reliable 2.5 liter Ford Duratec.

sounds like blown head gasket, did it overheat? Maybe do compression check before you pull cylinder head or swap out motor.
