Just got back from the local dragstrip tonite and it seems like mid 16s are a stock 3's 1/4 times. I ran four times and got a 16.4, 16.4, 16.5 and 16.2. I would call myself an experienced drag racer but being in a new car for the first time of course I think I can do better. I am going to go back when I get my Azenis or MX in a couple of weeks and see if I can pull a 16.1 or 16.0

Here is the timeslip from my best run:

BTW weighed the car too and it weighs 2870 with me out of the car. This is with spare tire, and about 5 lbs of laundry in the back ;)

[2.3Sedan 5spd]

EDIT: This is the thread where you can post 1/4 miles times. Let's keep it all on one thread (ie: not everyone starting their own), so we can compare #s better :)

Every car has a diferent method to get the max preformance out of it. Some work better if you launched them at redline others on midrange, also if you apply the gas pedal completly or halfway, it;s just a matter of learning the best way for this car. BTW, what car where you racing with?

What did you launch at? Did you get alot of wheel spin? I've had a few times to mess around and launch the car, feels tricky to me. I had it perfect once but did not get to see the rmps I was launching at. The other times I'd get massive wheel spin or it would have a good launch but bog alittle. I'll be taking it to the track soon to see what I can run.

On the 16.2 I launched at around 4000 rpm. I slipped the clutch out instead of dumping it. I dumped the clutch the first run and the wheel hop was so bad my bumper slipped out of alignment! This was at about 3000 rpms. I dunno if its the tires or the track surface was too slick but I will see what results I get with the new tires in a couple of weeks.

Ok well I just got back form the track as well and unfortunately was only able to make 1 pass, I also consider myself a good driver(read:Individual results may very) I only got a [email protected] I say only because I believe a 15.9 run is completely possible completely stock even on the RS-As once I learn to launch the car better, as apparent by the 1/8 mile trap speed you can see that I had some trouble with the wheel hop in the hole and my 60' time of 2.4 also backs this up since I know I can do better, all in all I think low 16 sec passes are average for stoak 2.3 HB Manual(sedan should be no different) hopefully in about 2 weeks Ill get another chance to head out there and get a few more runs in. Here is the timeslip I am car 752 in the right lane
Oh yeah this is only a prediction based on 1 run so dont take it seriously but I believe with an intake, exhuast, and better tires mid to low 15s are doable without too much fuss.

16.2? Sorry...

I have been to the Drag Strip with my stock Mazda Protege 1.8L DOHC (122 horsepower, around 100 horsepower to the wheels) with a single sports muffler and I have got 16.293.

You are telling me that the best time you could do is 16.204 with a 160 horsepower Mazda3 ????????????????????

Man! I got to try it! Two months left before the Drag Strip opens...!!!

Here is my Time Slip:

By the way, the 16.5 on the left is a '03 Mazda Protege 2.0L (ES-GT) with Intake & Exhaust mods... He had 130hp stock + mods, I have 122hp stock + mods.

I believe you misread me, I only got 1 run in and I said that a 15.9 is possible, you are also missing the hefty weight difference between the 2 cars you also said you swapped the muffler so it was not completely stock, there is also the issue with the wheel hop so I stand by my time with the fastest I could see our cars getting bone stock being 15.9 with some good driving.

I know. The Protege weighs 1,230KG, the Mazda3 is 1,530 I guess... That makes 300KG (600lbs?) for 40 more horsepower to the wheels.

And my Protege had only the muffler yes, but I don't think that the muffler will give any "real" gain in that type of Vehicle (except LOUD sound gain).
Lets assume that you are right, and that the muffler gives you no extra power. But then I bet that it is lighter than the stock one, thus less weight, and thus an advantage

Well i just got back from the drags in Perth Western Australia and i am VERY happy with my runs.......

My car is completely stock and this is the reason why i took it to the drags, to get a stock time so i can compare to my mods when they are done.....

Completely Stock Mazda 3 SP23
15.717
terminal speed - 87.89 mph = 141.44kph

A little word of advice...i left the tyre pressure normal at the back to prevent too much dipping on launching but dropped the 2 front tyre pressures to 20psi so that it gripped that bit easier :)

I am also taking the Mazda onto the Motorkhana track on the 18th April, so ill keep you updated on how that goes :)

So.....have i got the record here??? YAY!!
