First transmission fluid and filter change

2008 Mazda 3 i sport 2.0l 85k miles

I watched some videos and read some tutorials and i think I'm good to change myself. My question is the correct kind of fluid. I plan to with Royal Purple ATF (Max ATF | Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid | Royal Purple) and it looks like it will work fine but the video said to us m5 not m-v. Something about tiptroinc. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inNGvw_Kl1M) I'm not a car guy so I wanted to ask. I'm going for the RP just to treat my car a bit better.

Thanks in advance.

I believe Mazda M-V and M5 is synonymous. If you look at this TSB Mazda Service Bulletin 05-005!08!1928 - Documents, Mazda says to use ATF M-V (Type M5). Also, I would follow the procedure outline here instead: http://www.mazda3forums.com/95-maint...mazda-3-a.html

If you just did a drain and replace, you'll only get about 3 quarts out of total 9 quarts of ATF fluid. Fluids will be left in the hoses, the torque converter, and cooler. It'll be better, but you're still leaving majority of the transmission fluid untouched. If you follow the procedure outlined in the thread I posted above, you'll be able to get most, if not all of the fluid out of it. It's a lot more work, but I think it's worth it.

When I changed my ATF, I didn't want to shell out for the expensive RP or Amsoil fluids. It adds up quickly when you need that many quarts. (I ended up using 12 quarts to do my flush). I used Pennzoil Synthetic ATF. It's only $6.50 a quart from home depot, full synthetic from a reputable manufacturer, and Mazda M-V compatible.

Here's a thread I made on ATF Fluids. http://www.mazda3forums.com/61-power...tf-mazda3.html . The Pennzoil Synethetic ATF is Mazda M-V compatible.

Garage
I bought 4 qts of Castrol ATF Fluid from Walmart for the flushing process...

I then used AMSOIL ATF FLuid....Eventhough AMSOIL is expensive you do feel a difference!

Also changed out the filter too...

My 3 is not automatic, but I'm using Red Line tranny fluids in all my vehicles and its made a helluva difference.

So I don't have ramps, a drive way/garage or jack stands to work with, nor am I particularly experienced with cars to begin with.
I have a hand held pump and tried pumping the ATF through the dip stick from the top. I hit bottom with my probe hose and drew out about 2.3 quarts. The car is at 105 right now and the change was last done around 77. Should I take it in to get it done right? Last time my mechanic said that I didn't need to change it and that was at the oil change at about 103. The fluid I drew out today was a dark brown. How much should a ATF change and filter change cost?

With my current set up, I would expect the newer lighter ATF to sit close to the top so my dip stick constantly pulls pink but at the bottom it is probably dark brown. Will it mix or not really?

Good lawd . Never heard of anyone pump out the tranny fluid that way. Not to say it can't be done, but I've never heard of such a thing. Anyways, just take it in to a local shop and have them do it properly. From my experience, tranny fluid should look pinkish red. I change the tranny oil in my 3 about every 20k miles. I just do a drain and refill. My 3 has the manual transmission which doesn't have a filter to change out without having to take the tranny apart.

So after driving about 30 miles since the change and the throttle body cleaning (both done by me) my 3 picks up speed a lot faster which I am not used to and it goes up the gears faster. I have to brake harder and more constantly. There are times where I tried lifting my foot off the brake and see how fast it goes and sometimes it really goes up through the gears without any gas. I constantly have to have my foot on the brake in highly congested areas since I don't know if it is going to accelerate quickly or not.

I got my 06 2.3 GT recently and when I took it in for the state inspection, first oil change I asked the shop guys if I needed to do a ATF change. They said no. To me it is brown but not burnt. I went out of my way recently to replace 2 quarts. Is it them being honest or are they protecting themselves from a possible problem? The car is now at 106k and the last time the ATF was changed other than by myself was at 77k.

I pulled the negative terminal from the battery like a lot of people suggested. I allowed everything to clear. I no longer have the crazy fast acceleration on local roads.
