My new 2012 Mazda 3 i Touring only getting 21 mpg

Hi all, I bought an automatic 2012 Mazda3 i Touring on 9/12. Great purchase experience, except for the fact that I did NOT get a SkyActive engine and it is standard on the 2012 Mazda3 i Touring!

I got over that, but now I find that the car has only averaged 21 mpg over its first 1000 mile period, and I am pretty upset about it. In fact, the last tank of gas only got 17.6 mpg.

This is a far cry from the minimum 24 mpg city that was advertised and would account for 100's of dollars a year in fuel costs. There is no idling or car warm up going on, just normal driving- even my 8 year old Neon gets 22 mpg under the same use.

Can anyone offer me any assistance or advice on this? I imagine there is little recourse I have as the consumer in something like this... This was my first shot with a Mazda and I am afraid it might be my last.

Once things get a little more broke in the gas mileage will go up.
Also, if you are don't go by that screen for your mileage do it the old fashion way. That screen is 9 times out of 10 off of what the actual mileage is.

Oh, the car doesn't have any on-screen measurement. I'm using good ole math and the odometer.

I was unaware that it would need some sort of "break-in" period for gas mileage. What is the logic/science behind that?

I'm no mechanic, but my guess would be that the seating of seals/rings/etc., and some other factors would contribute to the rise in MPG after a break-in period. Also, the ECU may be getting used to the car, how you drive it, and the atmospheric conditions where you drive it. I think all of these factors contribute to a lower MPG rating before break-in is complete.

If not, you should ask your Mazda dealership about your experience, and if it's typical. I have a 2008.5 2.3L mazda3, and average 28+mpg on the highway, about 24 or so in the city if I'm not driving like an animal.

Best of luck,
M

ah that does make sense, especially the computer learning curve. I will continue documenting the second 1000 miles of the car and see if it improves. Thanks!
