The 2007 model also includes less visible mechanical changes. The keyless entry system was improved. Reinforcements to the body shell improve overall chassis rigidity. The front dampers of the MacPherson strut suspension have been re-tuned to quicken steering response and reduce understeer. The hydraulic dampers of the multi-link rear suspension were also re-tuned to match the front suspension changes. Mazda engineers and designers addressed concerns regarding cabin noise level by redesigning or changing multiple systems and adding sound-deadening material to the roof lining and hood panel.[18]
I was also told that the 2007+ models had more airbags added.

Do the early years have side curtain air bags in the seats?

My 06 "S" with cloth seats does not have airbags in the seats. My 08 Speed seats do have airbags, but I'm not 100% sure they are on a controller in my 06. The 07+ cars have standard side airbags front and back for all models except "I Sport", can't say for sure where they are mounted though. Cars.com says seat mounted and side curtain, so I would suspect that even if you changed front seats for STF you may still have the side curtain weight in the pillars.

3 trim levels. Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. Side curtain airbags in the seats and up on the pillars were optional in 04-06 on the 2.3L "sport" trim, but standard on all 07-09's.

TPMS, auxiliary ports, and another power port standard in 07. Probably not much, but something nonetheless.

Two things I know about the 14+ is standard power windows and traction control for all models. Good bit of weight in those 2 goodies.

Good catch. Extra reinforcements in the body/shell, more sound deadening, more airbags, TPMS ect. It all adds up. My 2006 2.3L doesn't have traction control of any kind. Don't quote me on this but I think it may have been standard on all 07+ 2.3L so that is another difference.

Ok, 10-4. Thanks Charles. I believe somewhere up the years I read they made TCS standard on the bigger motor, perhaps it started on the 2nd gens.

You appear to be correct that all 2.5 motors have TCS standard (10+). TCS from 07-09 years for Speeds only...can't imagine why?!

Everyone gets brake assists though! Woo! My favorite feature...NOT!

only in the US, in canada we didn't get TPMS
Aux ports and power port are negligible weight, but great to have in the car.
