Gearing update...on 225/45-15 rivals the car does 58-59 (GPS bounced back and fourth) in 2nd gear bouncing off the limiter for 10 sec

This is good info. The speedo is useless and the gearing calculators online never seemed to be quite right either.

Sounds about right. Well the 2.3L is known to be pretty robust so we're gonna test that theory by taking one with over 170K miles and take it to 7,500 rpm on a somewhat regular basis. Should be good times, kinda like seeing how many firecrackers it took to blow something up as a kid

If you know your ratios, this is a very handy tool for calculating various set ups: http://www.teammfactory.com/gear-calculator

Yeah except it reads high or the info I'm finding is wrong. Saying Dave's above setup should go 63 mph with these stats:

7,000 rpm

23.0" tire

4.11 final drive

1.842 2nd gear

But he's coming up with 59 mph tops with GPS.

Interesting. The calculator reflected my real-world results perfectly.

I think some Mazda3's came with a 4.416 Final drive. Could that be what he has? I can't remember if that's a manual or auto ratio, but the numbers add up. 4.416 gets you 59 mph (assuming 1.842 2nd gear.)

Edit: Nevermind. Pretty sure 4.416 was an auto.
