miata_racer's turrible STF build thread

Yep. I suck at these...but here we go!

Car is a 2008 Mazda 3s. It's black and has about 101k miles. It's got 3 bilsteins and one stock strut on the RF (warrantied the RF at tire rack...that sucked).

So now to the mod list for STF that's on it.

- stock 2012 MS3 rear bar (off my other street car)
- adjustable upper rear arms (might swap out for the stock arms with the whiteline offset bushings I have later)
- AEM cold air intake hacked in half to make a short ram.
- 17x7.5 Enkei fronts and stock miata 17x7 rears with 225 rivals.
- AWR passenger side mount

Upcoming mods?

- super secret coilovers that everyone else already has
- race seat on the driver's side so I quit falling out of the stock seat
- header back setup from OBX because the stock setup sounds lame
- ecu? maybe?
- new pulleys (including a new tensioner I suspect...sounds rattly at times)
- lower dogbone mount insert

corbeau double locking slider bracket assy for driver's side ETA Monday...I'll adapt that with some more steel to fit my Ultrashield SM seat. I estimate it will weigh about 30-32lbs total. I'll take solid over light any day

Passenger side will probably be a Recaro Pole Position. Why? I'm still fat and the recaro doesn't fit me as well yet. (that's a few months away though)

Subscribed! Glad you hopped in here. Only thing Eric's done the last few months is put a new battery in his car and you can hear crickets chirping in his thread :P

be prepared to cut the seat bracket if you can.

The Corbeau seat bracket is actually the Wedge Engineering ones, and you'll find yourself sitting about 1-1.5" higher than the OEM seat.

I need to cut mine come spring.

Adam it's not called a turrible build thread for nothing...it will suck soon enough

As for the seat bracket...my codriver is about 5'5 and my wife is 5'2. So if it sits higher I'll be ok. I'm 5'11. I have about 3" of headroom in my car in the stock seat with it all the way down. AND I like to recline it a bit

We shall see...If I need to lower it I'll drop the back end of it. So the closer you sit the higher it sits (good for the shorties).

As for a battery...I have an optima red top. I plan to test my miata's lightweight battery in the next month or two. Now I gotta upload pics of my ducting

The miata battery should be okay, just don't trust it for the sake of a daily car.

You can look into the Odyssey series like what I have (although I have the larger one rated for our car for daily use), but there are some certainly small and super light options out there, a cheap lead acid miata battery though is certainly the best way to go for cost concerns.

STF Batteries

I ran a 1996 Neon ACR in the early version of STS, and used a Sears lawnmower battery in that car, my daily driver, for over two years.

Keep in mind that this is Arizona, where it never gets really, really cold. That said, temps typically range from lows in the winter from about 30-40, and highs in the summer to 105-115.

Two years without fail. Just providing a personal experience. You may or may not enjoy similar results.

well i use the term miata battery loosely. I mean my 2 race batteries from my miata One is an Odyssey Pc whatever 580. The other is a motobat something lighter than the other one.

Both started the miata without any issues. The Motobat is about 6lbs and only died when I left the fans on for 30 min with no key.

Well the car was not awesome but not terrible today. I hate hate HATE stock springs and OEM replacement shocks uggghhhh

UPDATE: After talking to a few people the car did in fact get up on 2 wheels for a brief second or two. So yeah...time to get rid of this suspension!

Parts are supposed to be here Wednesday.
