Sorry to hear that Eric, glad to hear you're ok though. Cars can be replaced.

Please no STX. Mack already pissed into that headwind. Come back to STF. And that sucks about the car. My protege got totaled by some clueless woman plowing into me at a 50mph closing rate.

Glad you're ok

Mack you're kinda my test mule. You try everything and go full baller so we can learn

I figure if you're in an E36 instead of the MS3 it's not for creature comforts. What would it take for the MS3 to be a front runner in STX?

Personally I'd like to see a break away class from STX for higher power FWD cars.

It's called SMF and you even get to use R-comps to help put all that power down

True.

That aside, after driving the Speed3 for a week and a half, I don't see how the car is not a podium capable car at the national level. I've co-driven a National Tour dominating STX E36 for a couple seasons (it was only perfect for one season, we put baller shocks on it, then it was terrible).

The Mazda is way faster under acceleration. The most difficult part will be getting full use out of that power. The factory diff will have to do for the first season or two. It is a very impressive unit for stock but it has trouble keeping up at peak boost. If only there were OS Giken trees. Power add-ons are going to be the last focus on the car. The only concern is trying to free up the high revs where the motor just falls off. 300 hp and tq possible in STX?

Maxing wheel and tire allowance is also mandatory. Planning on the Mack-standard 255s on 17x9s. The Bimmer does have a massive width advantage. The 3 is two inches wider...per side! I've never, NEVER autocrossed a car that goes through slaloms as blinding fast as a well setup E36. I never got my old 3 to dance through slaloms like previous FWD cars I've driven, but if I can get that balance right it just might have a chance.

The MS3 is a little of a fatty, but I've always driven the heavy car for the class. I also believe that ST classes should be what they are, street cars! Like the old 3, the MS3 will be my daily driver.

Compromises were made in the selection of the car. The big one is that I have to be able to fit mountain bikes and dogs in the car (not necessarily at the same time). How many people consider that when choosing an autocross car? If practicality wasn't a factor I would have bought a Mini for STF, then a BRZ for STX. The fact that I had a lot of salvageable hard parts off the old 3 didn't hurt either.

I am confident it can be done. I guess we'll find our how well as the season runs on. Look forward to seeing you guys out at the events! I'll be moving this to a STX build thread at some point.

Nice new ride.

Talking tires and rev range, I have seen a few different approaches to the STX MS3 tire setup. Sounds like you're planning on a 255/17 square set up? Have you given any thought to something different? I asked because there's an argument that a 265/18 staggered setup may be better. The 265 is taller which helps lengthen the gearing a little, and it's slightly wider tread. Also running 225-245 width out back will help with narrowing and livening up the rear.

Man I wish I had to deal with this problem in STF. My tires are tiny!!
