What size wheel with r-compound tire on 2007 Mazda3 2.0L sedan?

I am currently running Sparco Drift wheels with 205/55-16 Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Specs at the track. I am in the market for a track day dedicated set of wheels with an r-compound tire. I wanted to get the Nitto NT01s or Hoosier R6s. Any feedback on what size wheel and tire I can put on without having to do spacers/offsets?

For autocross I run 225/50R16 Hoosiers on the stock rims with no issues on a stock 2.3. You could run 245's, but that might be too much tire and they do rub in lock to lock turns.

I think the wheel sizes were different on 2.0L vs 2.3L. Have you ever run the Nitto NT01s? I've heard great things about them.

Re: What size wheel with r-compound tire on 2007 Mazda3 2.0L sedan?

All the 16" wheels were 6.5 wide, no matter what the engine size.

Nitto is not competitive in autocross, so no I have not.

Frankly, if you are not running for timed runs, then don't bother with Hoosiers. Spend less money on the other R-Comps. Heck, right now BFG has a $50 rebate on buying 4 tires and this INCLUDES R-Comps.

Thanks for the feedback - I will be getting into Time Trials, so I may give those Hoosiers a shot after all. I assume you did not need offsets or spacers?

Re: What size wheel with r-compound tire on 2007 Mazda3 2.0L sedan?

If you're not bound by any sort of wheel size or offset rules and you want to play it safe, then I'd run a 7" wide wheel, +45ish offset, and 225's. I run that combo daily. Definitely no clearance/rubbing issues and plenty of room. Or if you are feeling adventurous you could try an 8" wide wheel with a lowish offset, say +40mm, and 245's but I can't guarantee there would be no clearance issues as I have never tried that combo. I would guestimate 245's on an 8" wheel with the right offset would be the upper limit without flaring/rolling fenders and/or spacers. I'd ask around and see if anybody has tried that combo and what the outcome was before trying.

Re: What size wheel with r-compound tire on 2007 Mazda3 2.0L sedan?

Since I have no rules to worry about, I can buy any wheel and tire size of my choice.

I have zero experience with offsets/spacers. My daily driving wheel is 16" with 205/55-16 tires, no offsets. I'm moderately lowered with H&R Sport Springs, no flared fenders etc, and do ocassionally experience very minor rubbing (much like described in the sharp transition turns) which I don't mind.

I will be bringing my track day wheels/tires with me to swap out the 16" 205/55-16 at the track. If I get a wheel/tire setup that needs an offset, how exactly does the offset work? Can I switch the offset back and forth easily? Or is the offset a permanent thing?

Fist off, you need to read up on what wheel offset actually is. Your stock wheels do have an offset, which is +52.5mm. Most cars have wheels with positive offset. When talking about positive offset in basic terms, less of it will widen the track of the car and push the wheels outward more flush with the fenders, on the other hand more offset will bring the wheels inward towards the strut. Spacers have the same effect as less wheel offset, meaning they push the wheels outward. A wheel with a +45mm offset and 5mm spacer is the same as just a wheel with a +40mm offset. Hope this helps some. I'd recommend reading up a little bit on it and this tech article on Tirerack.com is a good start.
