first track day and wheel hop

Mazda3 gurus - I did my first track day yesterday and had a blast! My instructor had never been in a 3 before and kept saying "wow, this car has a lotta torque!" And there's my problem - I got some serious wheel hop in heavy right-hand turns. It was so bad I was black flagged twice. Fortunately we were able to convince the track officials that there was nothing wrong with the car and that I could prevent it - which I did by letting up in the corners. Before that I was keeping up with all the Corvettes, even getting waved by a few.

A Mazda6 guy at the track said to replace the rear motor mount. I've seen several posts about wheel hop and this as a solution. Question 1 - is this a viable solution? Question 2 - there are a bunch of manufacturers, any difference between them? I want to get this fixed asap so I can sign up for another track day!

Check your passenger side upper motor mount first. These have a tendency to fail.

Yes, what he said. Check that one and the rear mount.

Then, if all is OK, welcome to our world. The final answer for me has been to lighten the throttle in heavy right hand turns....in first gear. Not so much in second, just first. The good news is that to do so is the fast way around that corner. Wheel spin causes the wheel hop, and wheel spin is.....slow.

If you have any wheel hop in second, I'd check all the mounts very carefully.

Re: first track day and wheel hop

I will say a quality rmn helps a LOT. Idk what the rules are for aftermarket parts but its definately a worhwhile upgrade. With dsc off in 2nd gear I would hop like crazy, but I just installed my James barone 80 duro bullet mount. Same scenario the tires still scream like a banshee but won't break traction. You get small amounts of vibes when under load (amplified by a/c) but nothing to complain about.

As others have said, check all three mounts first. They do go bad often.

Also, don't just visually check the passenger mount from the top because it's very difficult to diagnose a bad mount that way. Remove the mount (not hard to do) and take a close look at it. Here is the mount out of mine. I drove around a long time on this broken mount simply because it looked fine from the top side and the only symptom was a minor thud every now and then and a little more wheel hop than normal. It's easy to drive around on a broken mount for quite some time and not even know it.

The mounts have rubber bumpers on the sides and top to eliminate metal to metal contact if there is excessive movement in the mount so

Here is a pic of the bumper on one side still in pretty good shape

Here is a pic of the rubber bumper on the other side and it's obvious it was taking a beating for quite some time and the rubber took some many hits it's nearly gone

Re: first track day and wheel hop

from what I've read you have to jack up the engine to remove the mount and pull the shield - any other way to tell if it's broken or just assume it is and replace it?!

No good way to tell if the mount is broken without removing it. There is a really good chance yours is probably shot. You can't see or feel it from the top side. Yeah, you need to support the engine with a floor jack to take the weight off the mount and get the coolant reservior out of the way. There are some good write ups on here if you need them. Just search "motor mount" or google "replace motor mount mazda3." Many owners have dealt with the broken mount on the 3.

Aftermarket:
Pros: Good quality units more robust and last longer than OEM. Sportier feel, less engine movement, less wheel hop.
Cons: Depending on the mounts, can anywhere from a slight increase to a huge increase in interior vibrations. If you are going to replace one, you might as well replace all 3 mounts so the engine is evenly supported.

OEM:
Pros: No excessive vibes coming into the interior.
Cons: They don't last all that long and allow more wheel hop typically than good aftermarkets.
