Finally got me some Koni Yellows!!!

Set the rears and fronts both at about 50% stiffness and the car was amazing on the street. Nice and firm but not NEARLY as harsh as I expected. However, I got to the autocross last Sunday and I had a PUUUSSSHHHH compared with my blown up stock shocks. So I softened up the fronts 1/2 turn, run 2 was a little better. Another half-turn for the 3rd run and there we go! I would like to firm up the rears a bit more to help reduce some of the initial turn-in body roll and free the back end up a little more, but wow! What a difference!

I'd say it literally gained me 0.500-1.000 seconds on our course, which I pulled off a 46.799 on. Only 0.4 behind my friend's RX-8 which is usually 1.0-1.5 faster than me. Managed to PAX/Sto (street tire) 5th overall out of 51 entries. Not bad I didn't think.

Now I just need some tires and more practice.

Glad you like them. New performance shocks are nice. I just recently installed some new shocks myself. Went with the other yellow kind but equally impressed with them. They are "beefy." Sounds like you can't go wrong either way, but I preferred the Bilsteins slightly more after researching both options.

What did you prefer about the Bilsteins?

Re: Finally got me some Koni Yellows!!!

Seems like everyone around here likes the Konis and I couldn't find any local folks who ran Bilsteins on their 3s so I went with the Konis. If I remember right, they were a little cheaper as well. I'm on a budget here.

I wish the rears had a knob though. They have to be removed, put in a vice, then compressed and turned. Why couldn't they just put the normal adjuster on it so you only have to un-do the top and can insert the knob to adjust? Oh well. I think I'm going to firm up the rears a bit more for balance, but will hopefully be able to leave it alone after that.

I did notice what was stated in the article. I had to set the adjustments on the rears a little different because they didn't take the same number of turns on each one for the same rebound rate. Wasn't too bad but a little annoying. lol.

Yeah, but I don't put much stock in that.

Re: Finally got me some Koni Yellows!!!

I set the rears to FULL STIFF for this last autocross, and I have to say it's excellent to be able to feel that big of a difference in handling just from turning a shaft (and removing 5 bolts and sweating and cussing a lot because they couldn't just put a stupid knob on it)...

Anyway, I had on-power rotation! It was epic. Actually managed to spin the thing and took a few inside-line cones out this time! Only managed one clean run due to an excessive amount of turn-in. I like it! Now just to get used to it. Might firm up the fronts just a little bit to balance things out.

Re: Finally got me some Koni Yellows!!!

Jack Burns was quoted in a recent Grassroots Motorsports article saying that the new thing for HS Mazda3 guys is running Mazda5 Konis (don't recall if he said specifically FSDs or Yellows). Any one out there running this set up? Sounds interesting, thoughts?

I'll work on trying to find that article when I get home.

He was on the FSD's when he was racing his HS Mazda3. He seems to prefer them over the yellows. He said the hot setup now is running the Mazda5 FSD's on the 3. Take it for what it's worth.

I also noted that in his assessment that the FSD's turned in better than the Koni yellows. My assumption is that he tried them both.

After reading the article on shocks provided above, I'm leaning towards Bilsteins....... :P
