'04 3 Autocross/DD tires?

My 2004 3s Hatch is about due for tires due to autocrossing. I have 7/32" left on my all-seasons and have 4 events left, and will likely kill them off before the end of the season as far as ability to not get stuck in 1" of snow.

So, I'm thinking a good move would be to get some really solid summer tires to drive on the rest of the summer (and next summer) and autocross on for the remainder of this season and hopefully all of next season as well.

The issue I find is that the stock wheels are 17x6.5, and there's a limited selection in 205/50r17. All I can really find are Potenza RE-11s, and while I realize they're great tires... They're also considerably more expensive than, say, Hankook Ventus R-S3's. However, the Ventus R-S3's closest size to stock is a 215/45r17, which recommends no less than 7.0" wheel width. Will 215s or the immensely popular 225 width tires fit the stock wheels or am I stuck with either installing RE-11's or buying non-stock-legal wheels (which I can't afford anyway and would just as soon throw R-Comps on) just to avoid spending $1,000 on a set of summer tires?

I did some searching but didn't find much other than 225's didn't seem like a good idea. I couldn't see anything that said one way or another on 215s.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
-Eric

Re: '04 3 Autocross/DD tires?

FWIW......

I am a fan of the Dunlop Direzza Star Specs; I've had them on a number of cars used for autocrossing. They are reliable, wear well,
have fairly stiff sidewalls, and are priced quite well. I've never had to "water" them between runs here in Arizona, as many others
seem to need to do on other street tires here.

I put on the 215's (17x6.5 wheels) and find them to be a good fit.

215's will be ok on the stock wheels.

Re: '04 3 Autocross/DD tires?

Thanks guys, that's what I needed to hear.

Mazda3az, I know the Star Specs are great tires, but around here I think anything in the "extreme performance" category will be 1000x better than my all-seasons right now. I'm on a really, really tight budget so I really need to go for the cheapest thing I can find. I'm even thinking about just some max performance summer tires like the Hankook Ventus V12 Evo K110s because they're $88/each from Tire Rack and are bound to be better than what I've got. Although, I think with the R-S3s or equivalent I can actually post a time faster than my buddy in his RX8 which would just be the end of the world, and make me smile rather largely.

Kumho XS should be cheapest. Need some heat in them to work, they suck in rain. But it's up there on the list for summer tires.

Re: '04 3 Autocross/DD tires?

The Ventus R-S3 are only $1 more each from Tire Rack and seem to be one of the stickier extreme performance tires.

The only thing stopping me is the idea of dismounting/remounting them and the all-seasons 3 times over the next few months; Putting the summers on for a couple months, then the Grids back on, then the summers on again a few months later... lol. I wish I could afford some wheels. This would be easier.

We don't get anywhere near enough snow for snow tires, but summer tires will not get me out of my own driveway at least 5-10 days out of the winter, and it's always during important days at school or work it seems like. Otherwise I'd just run summers all year long and be careful when it's cold out.

I run BFG KDW2. Before r comps i used them for autox and they worked great. Best reviews in summer tire category for driving in rain. And they lasted 20,000 miles. Yet nobody considers them...

They are loud as shit and they are old. There are much better tires in the market in the same category now.
