Had a tire problem at my AutoX today

After the last AutoX event of last season I took my summer tires (stock Potenza RE050As) and wheels off the car and put my snow tires on. The potenzas were pretty worn, but I figured I could get a couple events and some street driving out of them before I had to replace them. After a lot of "on track" action at my AutoX event today, one of the tires started to have some little (about 1'' X 1'&#039 chunks coming out of one of them (on the tread closest to the sidewall). I had a couple people look at it and the consensus was that is was definitely not good or normal. One of the guys said that the tires also looked to be dry-rotted on the sidewall. I was planning on running another AutoX tomorrow, but this really has me kind of scared and I am not going to race on these tires again. I was going to go with RE-11s for my next tires but I think I am going to get another set of RE050s because I want to get new tires tomorrow (so I don't have to worry about it, and I want to have something for next weekend without missing any work) and it is all that I can find locally (and I always have had pretty good wear and grip with these until today). I guess I am just looking for some general reaction or tips to avoid this in the future. Any discussion is appreciated.

Re: Had a tire problem at my AutoX today

A few things...

- You could probably get by another event by running the chunked tire on the rear of the car since the front tires take about 70% of the brunt with the MZ3/MS3.
- If the chunking is on the outside of the tire, some more negative front camber may be able to prevent this type of damage in the future. If you plan on AutoX'ing these tires it may not be a bad idea to look around for possibilities other than the RE050. The stock RE050 tires are not known for lasting very long and there are other tires on the market that have better dry grip / performance for AutoX.

Yeah, do what Bill said and run it on the back until you can get a tire upgrade. I would step up to the RE-11, you'll thank yourself later. Chunking is not that unusual. In fact certain tires like the Star Specs are known for chunking.
