HS exhaust questions...

I have heard that a performance exhaust really opens up a non turbo 3, and was wondering what people recommend for autocross/daily driving? Since all cats have to be left intact, I was looking at several options, and wondering the best compromise of low noise, power, and cost...

1. 2.25, 2.5, or 3in (since both cats need to be used)?

2. exhaust with one muffler, or system with silencer added (or does retaining stock cats presilence enough)?

3. Mazdaspeed3 exhaust- does it bolt up easily and perform/sound well?

4. Aftermarket exhaust with Borla, Magnaflow, Aero Turbine(anyone try this), or trubenz pipes with a custom muffler setup (and the diameter of tubing)?

5. Something else I haven't mentioned?

Any guidance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm so cone-fused!

Re: HS exhaust questions...

Mazdaspeed3 stock exhaust.  Have a muffler shop graft it in behind your cat:

I pulled those pix from earlier threads on exhausts when I was doing the same research that you are. I haven't taken any pix of mine, but it looks the same (except the welds aren't as pretty). There are a few threads outlining the procedure in the Performance/Powertrain section. I considered having the muffler shop weld a flange onto the cat, then being able to bolt the MS3 up and put the stock back on if I ever sold the car -- then I said forget it, too complex, needed a donor cat for the flange. <shrug>

My installation is virtually identical. At first, the exhaust is going to sound LOUD from inside the car -- but it's a GOOD loud, and it actually quieted down after a few weeks of daily driving.  Still sounds good, though -- guttural, deep, not raspy or "ricey."  (I use my car as a daily driver as well as my weekend autoxer.)

It seems to my butt dynanometer that I have more power and the car revs more freely, but I also get the sensation of having to wind it up more, revving higher before shifting in every gear.  But with the stock exhaust, I had trouble hearing the car while racing (yeah, I'm old) as I use the engine sound as my tachometer since I hardly glance at my dash dials while running.  No such problem with the MS3.

I bought mine from a member in the Buy/Sell forum; usually lists for $200 - $250.  Usually you will find it has been cut over the rear wheel arch for easy removal -- I just had my neighborhood muffler shop re-weld the cut section, then match it up behind the cat to stay stock-legal. It tapers out from about 2.25" behind the cat to a full 2.5" the remainder.

I considered others, such as the Corksport -- nice unit for the price, but you lose the cat and that's not legal.  Same for the Tsudo clones on eBay -- nice price, not legal.

(Clay, I remember you from when we ran against each other in CS during a Divisional in Gainesville, FL a few years ago, and from MiataForum.  You had the best time on Day Two, a 52.5 if memory serves, and I had a breakout second day, right behind you with a 52.7 even though I pushed a mistake through three elements on the course.  Enough to move me into fourth but not enough to overcome my lousy Saturday.  I had the yellow MR2 Spyder.)

Re: HS exhaust questions...

Cosmic, what dB is your local sound threshhold before you get tossed?  I ran one event at Roebling Road where we had a 104dB limit, if memory serves. One car (a classic TR6 in a Mod class) was bounced for sound -- only time I've ever seen that happen at an event, but Roebling has neighborhoods encroaching and we had a Divisional second day on Sunday.  Couldn't even start engines before 11AM, per local rules.

Have you considered fabbing a straight pipe and changing it out before each event?  Not sure how much of a pain in the a** that might be for us 3s.  I had a buddy with a Spyder who went that route, but he had a welder and exhaust stock at his home shop.  He's obsessive that way -- said he could change it in 10 minutes without lifting the car.

Re: HS exhaust questions...

You talkin' about JK Jackson with the TR6? That might be the loudest car I've ever heard at an autocross.

I haven't done it yet, but I'm still planning to try the Supertrapp and remove the exhaust at events thing.

Akira,

I do remember the yellow MR2 and the weird autocross on the road course. John Darrow won that day in the green Miata (and passed away last fall with cancer). I have given up on CS with the coming of the never produced but legal MS-R Miata, and concentrating on my Yellow Bullit 04 Mazda3 sedan. I have done a few tweeks that I have discussed with Jack Burns, and hope to get to a big event or Nats this year. Glad to see a familiar face in the HS fold.

What do you think of the trubenz 2.5 exhaust for $270 shipped? Seems like a good performance bargain, and hope it would be quiet enough running thru both cats.

Re: HS exhaust questions...

truebendz will also rig it up however you want. Meaning I asked if they could weld in a pair of 2 bolt flanges so I could do a dump if I wanted. They said sure where do you want it? As for cost its about $60-75 more, but worth if for the ultimate weight drop IMO

the main local spot is 90db @ 75ft
I think a mz3 may be louder than my car because the turbo quiets things down.
the turn down pipe that I am going to try will have the exhaust exiting at the ground in the middle of the car, I expect it should pass without issue, but Ill know for sure come sunday

You should have a sound clip... Does it improve performance much other than the weight?

Could be -- this was at the SeDiv at Roebling in '02, I think, my first season and first-ever Div event. Silver and black car, hardtop. He tried stuffing the exhaust with steel wool after he was warned on his first run -- of course, the wool blew out all over the course on his second run, then he had to park the car.

Yeah, I think that was the loudest car I've ever heard at an event, too.
