SCCA members?

hey, I am am about 90% positive I want to join the SCCA. I was wondering if there are any highly active members in the SCCA. I would rather talk to someone in the northern jersey region, but anywhere in the US wouldbe fine. I would like to do the solo running but i would like to know what other options i have. I saw something about pro racing and club racing. I know about the fees and w/e. I also saw something about a competitors lecence. Whats that for? etc. I would like to talk to someone/people about this fully and hopfully help me with any question I have. Thanks!

Re: SCCA members?

Have you run at any of the events at all? If you haven't, I strongly encourage you to go check it out before you pay the registration fees and join something you might not enjoy. Autocross SOLO II is quite a rush and it's worth the money IMO. Good luck

I havn't run or actually seen any of the races, but I do pass them when I drag race. My uncle has done it and he said I would love it and hes pretty good at reading me when it comes to cars. whats the diff between that and solo I, etc

Re: SCCA members?

Be prepared.... after you start autocrossing, drag racing will seem pretty boring!

I guess I don't count since I am Canadian.

I have been a SCCA member for some time now.* My best advise is to joint the forum here, http://sccaforums.com/forums/default.aspx , if you want more answer to your future questions.*

Your SCCA membership comes with a monthly magazine call the Sports Car, and for autocross events, you don't need a competition license since it is classified as a "non-speed event" in their insurance policy.* IMHO, SCCA is a great organization to join if you are serious about competitive driving.

Better sign up soon. Season is just around the corner for the northern part of the country.

Re: SCCA members?

I too am a long-time SCCA member (since 1988), and a Mazda3 club racer. Well, I still have the Mazda (it's for sale!), but I'm really racing a Subaru STi this year. Feel free to send me e-mail and I'll help you out any way I can.

Info about my Mazda is here: http://www.godoggoracing.org/2005/

Joe Cheng built and drives possibly THE fastest autocross car ever built. He knows of what he speaks too. (Hi Joe!)

Re: SCCA members?

JoshS and Hoe Cheng, do you guys do that for a living or is it more of a hobby with a little extra cash in your pocket? I plan on doing it for fun right now, but I looking into getting sponsored for dragging and autocross as well as show with the same car. I'm not looking to be pro-stock in the drag so I can race in the autocross

Re: SCCA members?

i watched my first event in January..... I was hooked. i competed this past weekend in my first race....

the one main thing i learned is that, I HATE WAITING A MONTH BEFORE THE NEXT ONE........
plus it's legal

we had a blue corvette pull into the parking lot there in selma, tx, he was past the entrance and everything and all of a sudden a cop pulls in behind him with his lights flashing... dunno if he got a ticket or not though....
but it was funny to see the cop straining to watch the track as he left. anyone know any cops that autox? do they race their black and whites????????

Re: SCCA members?

No one makes a living being a race car driver unless you are at the VERY top echelons of the sport. Joe and I both spend our hobby money at it. Your sponsors, if you're lucky enough to find someone who thinks sponsoring you will be a win-win, will be unlikely to completely cover your expenses, but good luck!

Kodiak -- yes, the police have been known to bring their patrol cars to autocrosses. In fact, at the annual SCCA National Tour event that used to happen up in Kent, WA (near Seattle), there was an annual "police shootout" class where officers from nearby municipalities would compete against each other (lights, sirens, the works). But I think it's a lot more common to see the police cars at the drag strips.
