Re: BMW 400HP...press of a button...BOOM 500HP...

My car has a button that adds hp and reduces gas milage too... it's called the accelerator

Seriously though, why put a button on the dash that adds 100hp? Wouldn't it suffice to just have that feature activate upon pressing the accelerator to the floor? Seems kinda stupid to me... and if it's just a gimmick, well since when has an $85k M5 been the place for gimmicks?

Since BMW has gone to more electronic gizmos, this was a natural evolution. Esp. since I recently read that the car has over 100 differnt selectable electronic options, the owner can choose.

They also seem to think owners will want to conserve fuel most of the time @ 400hp. :?

I'm not arguing with you, but.... if that's the case, then it sounds like what the button really does is put the car into economy mode, right? I mean, when you really think about it, if the 500hp mode isn't stressing the engine like crazy (i.e. nitrous or something), then the car obviously has a 500hp engine that's being detuned to 400hp when the button is "off". Sounds like just the opposite of all those variable displacement systems, where 2 or 4 cylinders shut down during cruising.

I would have thought BMW would give its customers a little more credit than that....

I think they are going into unknown territory. A very high mainenance & electronically reliant engine that they will need cooperation from users & dealers.

incase anybody missed it; here's clarkson's take on the impact of the little unassuming "M" button

Re: BMW 400HP...press of a button...BOOM 500HP...

the legacy GT B-spec has the same thing, except it has three modes: economy, normal, and sport. Sounds pretty useful, multiple ECU maps directly from the manufacturer. all cars should have it. Especially considering we have drive by wire, and steer by wire...
