That fresh install on an SSD though... seeing windows from post in less than 15 seconds is amazing...

And it goes something like this :
"hi, I'm new. I'm too lazy to search so answer my question. But I won't actually tell you what my issue is".

I currently have a 1TB 5400 rpm hard drive. Is it worth just dropping down to 256gb ssd or would getting a 7200rpm hdd make a good enough difference? And brandini, hybrid: yay or nay?

My wife had bought me this for my birthday maybe four years ago.

They put a pair of 7200 rpm drives configured in RAID 0. It's fairly quick as it is, so I've resisted the temptation to throw a couple SSDs in to replace the existing drives. As Windows 7 gets longer in the tooth, I'm more likely to make that plunge soon (most likely downloading the free W10 upgrade, then swapping the drives to do a clean W10 install on 'em).

Scrap the hybrid. Again I don't know if they're better than the one or two I tried, but the first one failed, and I don't actually remember if I got another one and it did the same or not.. I'd have to look at my purchase history on Amazon many years ago.

Go SSD. The difference is not even comparable. Even if you get a 10,000 RPM HD, it isn't comparable. Just do it. Seriously, it's worth it. Don't have to get a huge one if money is tight and really want the performance.
Like I said earlier can get a small one, just put windows and your software you always use on it, and all games etc., big files and just wasted space files that don't need the performance on a HDD.

Repeat after me: Samsung 850 Pro

After installing it you will wonder where it has been all your life.

Be sure it's a sata 6 port on your board and on a port directly connected to your chipset and not on a mfr added-on controller

then install the samsung software and it'll walk you through changing windows settings for best performance (small initial swap file size, no indexing needed, and so on)

the x51 has an addition sata connector but no power, so you have to run a split molex connector.

hmmmmmmmmmm

I will probably do it, and get a 128gb.

Software like 3dsmax and photoshop just open soooo slooowwww after being used to my desktop for so long for stuff like that. My laptop it never bugged me because I realized it was slow, but the x51 otherwise has the same specs... other than the HD.

Otherwise .. just throw the current HD in an external or whatever, and put the SSD in place, since I don't need to be storing anything on the alienware in the first place, it's just the daily stuff computer.

Also, Brandon, ended up having to pull the external off the router... it liked to start resetting for no apparent reason
