sok07's 'other' rides ... ['03 Mr2 Spyder (aka 'V4D3R') & '73 MG BGT (aka 'KB')]

Just stuffing my garage with cars. I don't have a $45-85k super car in the garage...yet. But hey all my rides are paid for.

Sharing the garage with my '09 Mazdaspeed3...2003 Toyota Mr2 Spyder and a 1973 MG BGT. I'm beginning to think I have it backwards in terms of speed an performance. LOL

The MR2 was purchased back in June '09 for my weekend/track car and so I wouldn't put too much miles on the speed3. Paid about $13k for it with 27,000miles on the odometer. During winter months it is pretty much garaged, but during the spring and summer I drive it about 50% of the time. I also autoX the car from time to time.

The MG BGT was purchased a few weeks ago (mid-April) for $500. It was stored and placed in a garage back in 1995 and hasn't been started or driven ever since. We drove about 5hrs to pick it up, placed it on a flat-bed hauler and brought it home. It now sits at a co-worker's/friend's house (he's worked on mg's for 20years) as we get most of the engine/powertrain back in running condition. After we get the engine/transmission back up and in good working order, it will then head over to my garage for full restoration.

1973 MG BGT which will be taken apart, restored, rebuilt with a few of my modern touches. FancySauce hasn't been fired up ever since 1995 and has been garaged for 15 years, this build will be epic.

End goal would be supercharged rebuilt inline 4 slightly bored over, head re-work, coilover front and rear suspension, painted Audi dolphin grey, dechromed w/ brushed aluminum trim, as well as some modern touches (minilite wheels, roll bar, racing seats, HID retro, LED tails, clear tail lights, etc.). Budget is looking to be $13k for the build. We bought and picked up the MG B for like $250 from one of his friends. Great price... because it was more of a hand-me down from a MG B enthusiast/co-worker. He has has been impressed w/ what I have done with my speed3 and spyder and he wants to see what I can do with a MG BGT. Uber-WIN.

(April 28, 2010)
first couple minutes turning wrenches under the car, and everything is looking pretty good. 1hr worked. New battery installed...fuel pump still works, lights and electrical systems are in working order, old tank of 15yr old gas is almost empty, and engine turns over. Next up...distributed ignition tune-up (plugs, condensor, points, distributor cap & rotor, wires, and coil), carburetor rebuild and adjustment, timing, oil change, fuel filter change and she should fire right up. Seriously only flaw in the car is the dent on the front fender in front of the wheel. Just need to pop it out and primer it and it'll be good.

(May 05, 2010)
After 15years of silence, the MG BGT comes back to life. Apprentice (me) doing the most of the work and being mentored by the master (Gregg, a co-worker and mgb expert).

6hrs of work....two carbs cleaned and rebuilt, distributor fixed (seized advance mechanism), new points, condensor, spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, valves adjusted, timing adjusted, and carbs tuned. Compression good, oil pressure good, cooling system working great (doesn't overheat or leak), fuel pump good, and alternator good. Next up...work on the hydraulic systems. It definitely needs a new clutch slave cylinder, clutch master cylinder and brake master cylinder. After those, the MG should be back to road worthy status!

1973 MG BGT - Fired up and idling

(May 15, 2010)
Hydraulics/pedal box removed & overhauled...new brake master cylinder, new clutch master cylinder, new clutch slave, new clutch hose, and hydraulics/pedal box cleaned and repainted. Car now is able to move and stop on it's own. It shouldn't be too long now and it should be road worthy once again. Haggerty car insurance and DMV here I come. All it needs is new tires. lol

Sok's 1973 MG BGT - first drive

Future mods....

- ported head
- Superlite 15" wheels
- lowered more!!! (1.5" drop springs up front for now....coilovers and new independent rear suspension)
- limited slip diff
- 5 spd transmission
- wilwood front brakes
- scarebird rear disc brake conversion
- Moss supercharger
- roll bar
- Audi dolphin grey paint & dechrome (use brushed aluminum and semi-gloss trim)

Restoration to stock is almost complete. Spent the weekend draining & refilling all of the fluids, replacing brake lines and overhauling the rear drum brakes, replacing fan/alternator belt, flushed and painted radiator, lubed up steering rack, cleaned up interior, cut & polished & waxed paint, etc. etc. etc.

Tag, new tires and hagertys car insurance coming this week. The MG will be ready & legal to drive on the open road in a few days. Now I have a good clean starting point. This week i will install new control arm bushings and 1.5" front lowering springs. I'm going to work on the front suspension first to determine where I want the rear to sit. It now sits at stock GT ride height in the rear. Looking at either getting 6-leaf MGB roadster springs or the 6-leafs with at 1" drop block.

I'm digging all the rides.. I don't know much about the MG though. so I'll stay tuned for updates/upgrades and the Toyota is one car I need to get ahold of for a day of autocrossing, they look so fun out there...
