The only bummer about the whole trip

US 129 was closed at the Tenn. line due to a rockslide that occured after the stretch known as the Tail of the Dragon. It was unfortunate that my gf didn't get to drive it on her first trip but it gave us the opportunity to explore some less-traveled roads. We had a great time and the weather was nearly perfect sans the rain as we were leaving. Some snow was still at the top of the Cherahola skyway which, as usual, proved to be the most enjoyable road. If you are/were planning a trip to the area but might have been swayed by the recent closure, go. I can assure you there are plenty of other places to enjoy the drive and if you're really feeling froggy, now is a great time to break out the hiking boots and get of the roads for an afternoon.

Re: Latest Trip to the Dragon

I don't see what the big deal with the Cherohala Skyway is. The Dragon is a one of a kind road, no intersections, no nuthin for 11 glorious miles. Cherohala seems like any mountainish road anywhere. I wasn't too thrilled going up though going down wasn't too bad.

We've got a Miata get-together in Bristol TN the first weekend of June. The original plan was to take a couple more days off and head down to the Dragon for a day or so of fun before heading home, but if 129 isn't available, I'm not terribly interested. Maybe we'll sneak down for a couple days in the fall.

Re: Latest Trip to the Dragon

I live about 30 minutes away from both 129 & Cherhala, 129 won't re-open until June @ the earliest I believe. Locaal businesses are ticked off 'bout that...

Life is not a box of chocolates. It's more like a jar of jalapenos, what you do today may burn you tomorrow.

Re: Latest Trip to the Dragon

The Dragon is a complete blast when there is no traffic on it, when it's not wet, etc. Traffic is the main reason I have a hard time enjoying it. Unless you're on it really early or late in the evening, you're going to get stuck behind a camper, grandma/pa, garbage truck....something going WAY slower than what you want to do. I'm not saying treat it like a road course because it's not but 5mph turns any road into a boring drive. I enjoy the Skyway because of higher speed, better scenery, relaxed driving and less traffic.

With that said, yes...the Dragon is not due to re-open until the end of either June or July...I can't remember what the lady said at the Deal's Gap Motorcycle resort. Businesses on both sides (Deal's Gap Resort and Punkin' (place?) motorcycle hotel) are ticked off that TDOT has closed the entire stretch off. TDOT says this was due to the high probability of another slide which is understandable given that no less than 5 or 6 other roads in that area were closed as well. We ran across some smaller slides in a few areas that didn't affect the road. The area relies heavily on tourists and without them, they will suffer. A lot of places are running on skeleton crews and laying people off. If you can/want to go, do so. The area could really use the business and most places will bend over backwards to get you there and keep you happy. We got a free night's stay at the Microtel in the "suite". I'm sure my GF and I (maybe a few others) will return in the fall when everything is open and the leaves begin to change (truly a sight).

Re: Latest Trip to the Dragon

The SkyWay is a fantastic drive. Its the road we take to get to the Dragon from our cabin down there. Well be back down there again with the MINI in September, Hoping for clear days so we can get some fun driving in.

Campers suck balls on the Drago..piss me off so much.
